We’re incredibly proud to announce that Alex Shaw and Hayley Finlayson have been selected to represent Queensland at the 2026 Australian Boxing Championships in Canberra, from 25 November! 🇦🇺

🔥 Alex Shaw — 90kg+ Super Heavyweight
🔥 Hayley Finlayson — 54kg Women’s Elite

This is a fantastic achievement for both athletes and a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment they’ve put into their boxing.

The Australian Championships also serve as trials for the World Championships, making this an enormous opportunity for both athletes to compete at the highest level and take another step towards representing Australia on the world stage. 🌏🥊

🏆 HBC NUMBER 24 — A NUMBER THAT HAS TO BE EARNED

Today we officially awarded Alex his HBC number — No24.

For 14 years, hundreds of boxers have walked through the doors of Hinterland Boxing Club. In that time, only 24 athletes have been awarded an official HBC number. Interestingly, 5 times that number have actually boxed for the club — so this isn’t something handed out for simply turning up and putting on the gloves.

It represents resilience, competitiveness, humility, respect, commitment, and the willingness to win — while still representing yourself, your opponent, and our club the right way.

Alex has consistently demonstrated all of these qualities, both inside and outside the ring. He has represented HBC with pride, worked through adversity, and continued to push himself against some of the best competition in the world.

So No 24 is well deserved. 👊🥊

The uniform was actually sitting there ready to go after being allocated for Alex’s Commonwealth Games campaign. Unfortunately, that didn’t eventuate— so we would like to thank taxpayers for funding a bloody good HBC No24 uniform! 😂🇦🇺

That’s a wrap on this camp.

China 🇨🇳 Belgium 🇧🇪 France 🇫🇷 Northern Ireland 🇮🇪

It’s been an incredible seven weeks away. There was always a small chance Alex might earn a spot on the team, but unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. After being overlooked for the World Championships, he’s now been overlooked for the Commonwealth Games.

Despite that, Alex has been outstanding throughout the entire camp. Watching him train and perform only reinforced what I already believed—a medal opportunity has slipped away.

But that’s sport, and that’s life. Like we’ve always done, we’ll regroup, keep grinding, and set our sights on the World Championships and the Olympic qualifiers early next year.

I couldn’t be prouder of Alex. He has grown exponentially over this trip—not just as a boxer, but as a person—and I’m excited to see what comes next.

To the Commonwealth Games Australian team athletes and coaches, thank you for welcoming me into your preparations over the past seven weeks. I am incredibly proud to have been a small part of your journey. You have all welcomed me like family, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Now it’s your time—go out onto the biggest stage, back yourselves, and do what you’ve worked so hard for. Australia is behind you, and I can’t wait to watch you shine.

And finally, to Aleesha—my rock through every high and every low. Your emotional support and the incredible job you do keeping the gym running while I chase this dream can’t be overstated. I hear people complain about how busy their lives are, but the truth is most couldn’t walk a single day in your shoes. The sacrifices you make, often without recognition, are the reason I’m able to do what I do. I am forever grateful for you and everything you give to our family, our gym, and this journey. I couldn’t do it without you. ❤️
