Following my student’s advise @alexander_perlin
East of Eden.

Today I want to talk about Kate (Cathy) from East of Eden and yes, she’s the kind of character you either love to hate or just plain hate. But as a teacher, I love using her in class she’s perfect for pushing students to go beyond she’s bad and dig into why and how the author shows it.

Kate isn’t just evil she’s coldly strategic. She doesn’t act on impulse she calculates. That’s a great angle for vocabulary calculated, deliberate, ruthless, manipulative.

Her marriage to Adam is another goldmine. Adam sees her as pure, almost angelic. We, the readers, know better. That gap between perception and reality is dramatic irony at its finest. In class, we practice phrases like He idealizes her, while we see her true nature. There’s a stark contrast between… The reader is aware of what the character isn’t.

Later, as Cathy Ames, she turns the system against itself. She doesn’t fight patriarchy out of moral outrage she uses it. She controls the brothel, influences powerful men, and even poisons Faye to take over. This is where we talk about agency but not the heroic kind. Hers is agency used to dominate and destroy. Students love debating Is she powerful or just destructive? Is survival an excuse for what she does?

And then there’s her role as a mother. Or rather, her complete rejection of that role. Her indifference to her sons, Aron and Caleb, is chilling. It’s a strong example for discussing emotional detachment She views them as liabilities, not children. Her actions reveal a total absence of maternal instinct.

Symbolically, Kate is Steinbeck’s take on the destructive impulse a modern-day embodiment of the Cain side of the story. But unlike other characters who wrestle with the idea of timshel (thou mayest the power to choose), Kate seems to choose darkness without a second thought.

More: Florence Pugh absolutely deserves all nominations♠️
