My dad always told us that when he died, we could cremate him and flush him down the toilet. “All drains lead to the ocean,” he’d say, then laugh.
The first time I went with him to Australia, he took me to Burleigh Heads. I remember him talking about how much he loved it there. The water, the beach, the surf.
After dad passed, our oldest brother Nick told us he’d had a dream that he paddled dad’s ashes out at Burleigh. From that moment on, it became our plan, to make Nick’s dream a reality, to bring dad back to the place he loved most.
This was the day we did it.
I still miss dad every day. It’s crazy to think that someone you’ve loved and talked to every single day of your whole life, someone who had been my best friend, is just gone. There’s a piece of my heart that is forever broken for him, and the last three years has not been easy. Not by a long shot.
But I’ll keep going. I’ll keep living for the moments where my mind says, “Dad would have loved this.” And that’s how he lives on through me. Through all of us. Love you dad 🤍
