Here are some pictures from 2003 in Ghent, Belgium, Soulwax’s hometown. I had stickers on my bo*bs that said “I love Soulwax” and “HI Ghent”

And here is an excerpt of my memoir I am writing to be published sometime in 2027 by Omnibus Publishing.

In 2002, when I was touring in Europe after Bad Babysitter got onto the pop charts in the UK, @alexandertechnique and I would go to the clubs and party after our gigs. In London, we went out somewhere and heard Missy Elliot rapping over ACDC’s “Back in Black.” My jaw dropped. In late 90s New York, I had heard Mark Ronson play Jay-z right next to Led Zeppelin but that was next to- I had never heard them actually combined. I looked at Alex. “Are you listening to this? “ I said. This is next level shit! Who did this? I ran over to the DJ to ask. He said “2manydjs” which I couldn’t hear but I did hear “Radio Soulwax” after I said “What? What? What?” over the loud music a few times. Then he played “Stroke of Genius” by The Freelance Hellraiser, which was the Strokes mixed with “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilara. The DJ was at first annoyed with all my questions, but then when I told him I was the Bad Babysitter girl, completely shifted and allowed all of my inquiries. I marveled at the effect of the social currency I now possessed as someone becoming famous, how that would shift people the minute they found out who I was. I had never heard of the Strokes, even though they were from my hometown in NYC, but was astonished that they made Christina Aguilara, who I hated, sound cool.

“I wanna do this Alex, but like with more hip-hop, and like weirder stuff and other kinds of music,” I told him.

“It would be cool to do on 4 turntables,” he said. “Omg soooo cool,” I agreed, excited.
“The only thing is uh, well, you gotta learn how to DJ hun,” Alex said sheepishly.

And so I did.
We would eventually end up making vinyl bootlegs of our mashups and our mix CDs were so in demand they would sell out in a day at Rough Trade in London. To be continued. photo @robotgaze
