Fashion Quarterly - Spring 2026 ‘The Art of Style’ photographed by Scott Hardy @scotthardy.work, starring Alex Cater @62management and co-styled with @courtneyjoe_ This exclusive behind the scenes look at putting together 56 looks for the opening night of @nzfashionwk @theopeningnight_nz was a combination of education, art history, costume, storytelling and pure fun. Special thank you to all the designers, galleries, costumers, artists and creatives who lent their work to Courtney and I for the show. Stylists: @danahwa + @courtneyjoe_ Photographer’s assistant: @sebas.gin Fashion assistant: @katherimge Hair: @michaelbeelhair Make-up: @kathgould_makeup Archives consultant: @iamzoewalker From dark poetics to D.I.Y street art, various art movements helped shape the research for this shoot and subsequently the @theopeningnight_nz show. Frances Hodgkins and our small cohort of impressionists were an inspiration (particularly Kate Sylvester’s collaboration with the Frances Hodgkins estate in 2018). @lelajacobs’ work with artists was also an inspiration- including her unique collab with painter @nichola.shanley Alex trying an archival corset from the @nzballet with a pair of classic blue jeans was in keeping with the stylistic approach around ‘the performance of dressing for everyday life.’ Talented designer and artist @hannahleejade kindly loaned her unique wedding dress for the project. @courtneyjoe_ and I in the background trying to figure out casting for the show in between styling the shoot #multitasking Vivienne Haldane’s iconic 1993 series with The Pacific sisters has always been on the mood board for me.
