📢 Open now in Middlesborough! @alexculshaw_'s newly commissioned work 'Blue Lagoon' is premiering at @middlesbroughartweek until Saturday 3 October 2026 ✨

'Blue Lagoon' is a new moving image work exploring the links between industrial extraction, ecological care, and somatic release through the lens of a post-industrial North East England coastline. The film features a stretch of coast near Seaton Carew, locally known as the 'Blue Lagoon', which shares its name with an infamous 1970s nightclub located just down the road. This twinning of coastal landscape and nightclub space fuses these distinct environments, leaning into overlapping layers of site, memory, and imagined geography. In connecting these references, the film reflects on how nightlife culture so frequently inherits industrial geography, turning spaces built for heavy extraction and manufacturing into sites for music and movement. In doing so, the work examines the friction between the necessities of labour, leisure, and latent threat, exploring how industrial terrain is reconfigured into a sanctuary for restorative and collective joy.

Alex joined us over the summer as part of her FVU:LAB Research and Development Residency, where she focused on developing 'Blue Lagoon'. As part of this, Alex worked with staff at Nottingham Trent University's Design and Digital Arts Building to experiment with Foley and 7.1 Surround Mixing, as well as in the Virtual Production studio to create a simulated club scene with Notts-based performers.

🎟 Free entry!
📍 Little Boro, Centre Square, Middlesbrough

How many of you recognise this poster? 🌞

This weekend we’re opening our doors for @southbermondseyarttrail, Friday & Saturday, 12–6pm — and we really hope to see you there!

This is quite an important date for us because, exactly two years ago, we opened our doors for the very first time. So this weekend also marks our 2nd birthday! 🎂

The print you see here was created on that very first day. When we opened to the public, we asked all of you — our guests, friends and supporters — to draw or write whatever came to mind as a memory to keep from that night.

Looking back at it now feels incredibly special 🫂🖤
Thank you for being with us for these two years. Thank you to our incredible members, who we cherish so much, and to all the amazing artists we’ve had the pleasure of working with along the way.

Happy 2-year anniversary to us — and to everyone who has been part of the Firstfloor journey.
And now the important question… should we have a birthday party to celebrate? 👀🎂

With love,
Greta & Matt x

📢 CASTING CALL!

@alexculshaw_ is looking for Extras & Movement Participants (Aged 18+) based in or near Nottingham to take part in the production of a new film titled 'Blue Lagoon', currently in development as part of Alex's FVU:LAB residency.

→ 'Blue Lagoon' explores how personal and collective experience is held within shifting landscapes. The project juxtaposes an industrial coastline with club culture. Alex is filming an imagined, dreamlike club sequence utilising @nottinghamtrentuni’s state-of-the-art Virtual Production Studio (featuring a massive 9x4m LED video wall). Instead of a traditional physical set, the LED screen will display pulsing, abstract visual textures and the studio will build lighting environments. This is an experimental film shoot to generate new footage.

No professional dance or movement training is required: Alex is looking for people who have great energy, a love for dancing, club culture and feel comfortable moving freely in response to music on camera.

📆 Shoot dates: 19/20 August
📍 Nottingham Trent University (NTU), Virtual Production Studio
🎬 Paid: £150 / Day Lunch Provided (flat rate, up to 8 hours including lunch/breaks)
🔗 Follow the link in bio to find out more and apply, listed under 'Opportunities'.

Introducing Alex Culshaw 🎬

We are excited to announce that @alexculshaw_ has been selected for FVU:LAB — a residency from Film and Video Umbrella delivered in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University @nottinghamtrentuni. The residency provides opportunities for four emerging moving image artists to work with cutting edge technologies at NTU’s new Design and Digital Arts building.

→ Alex Culshaw is an artist filmmaker working across moving image, sound, and live performance to investigate the unstable relationship between the cinematic record and lived experience. Moving between the intersections of labour, site, and collective memory, her practice employs strategies of restaging, image degradation, and live narration to examine how personal histories are constructed, mediated, and retold. By manipulating digital material and introducing performative elements to her screenings, she challenges traditional cinematic conventions and explores how presence is held or lost.

"I'll be using my time during FVU:LAB to expand my new film 'Blue Lagoon', working with Foley sound, 7.1 surround mixing, and virtual production to recreate an imagined club scene. The name 'Blue Lagoon' refers to a locally known stretch of coastline beside the Hartlepool nuclear power station and a legendary nightclub in Seaton Carew. The film examines the intersection of memory, celebration, and survival with shifting economies and fragile ecologies."

👀 We'll be sharing more about Alex's FVU:LAB residency soon!

Week 2
Professor Ray Lee hosted by Senior Lecturer @helene_kazan_
An award-winning sound artist and composer, Ray Lee creates spinning, whirling, and pendulous sound installations and performances that explore “circles of ether” — the invisible forces that surround us.

Week 3
Luke Turner hosted by Senior Lecturer @paul.kilsby
Luke Turner’s projects and participatory performances employ online media, video, text, and photography to explore the operations and oscillations of art. His work fosters new forms of communality across digital and physical networks, and his research interrogates the rise of online extremism.

Week 4
Artist Marysa Downing, hosted by our specialist technician Adrian Pawley and practical tutorials.

Week 5
Jenna Finch @jenwenthehen
Artist, art therapist, and @rainham__sheds drummer. Jenna will also offer an interactive therapeutic workshop.

Week 6
Alex Culshaw @alexculshaw_
Screening of her new film Studio Dialogues, followed by discussion of the work and practical tutorials.

Week 7
Anna Barham @banana_harm hosted by Senior Lecturer Sam Skinner @fig_oxford
Working across video, sound, print, installation, and performance, Anna Barham’s work considers language as it moves between different material forms, technologies, and bodies.

Week 8
We have booked the Arena RHB for 4 students across FAD, BA, MA and PHD programmes to present their works in progress and gain feedback from tutors and students.
