🎇 moved to NYC 7 years ago 🎇

July 4, 2019 was my first day living in NYC, which if we’re going off the ?? true or not idc ?? thing that our cells regenerate every 7 years, means I’m a different person than I was before I moved here. What I know is true is that in my tiny sweaty box of an apartment in Manhattan, I started what has been indisputably the happiest chapter of my life. Grad school (the MFA I wanted for years and finally got). The start of my second ever relationship with the person who would be my fiancée. My dream job in publishing. So many of my friends. The longest I’ve ever consecutively lived anywhere. The only time I’ve ever felt completely at home.

God, what’s been the best part? Falling in love with my fiancée in a dive bar while she sings along to “1985?” Bringing my second book to acquisitions as an editor literally 20 mins after getting my first agent offer and walking around FiDi with my heart exploding? Wheeze laughing reading our old hilariously bad fiction in an empty classroom? One of my oldest friends helping me hold a needle to do my first T shot while fireworks from Coney Island went off through her window? Seeing my name come up as an Author Mentor Match Mentee? My grad school professor and classmates singing me happy birthday my first year here? Writing “Kade” for the first time on a post it note alone on a summer Friday in the Holiday House office? Getting matching tattoos with my grad classmates, when in undergrad I had panic attacks all graduation day because I knew the world would chew me up and spit me the fuck out? Too many wild, howling joys to ever list.

I didn’t know I could ever be happy, when I moved here kind of a fuckup on the upswing terrified of flaws I knew could undo me. I just really, really wanted another shot at it—because to move forward, I needed to know what I’d do with it. Now I feel more at home than I ever have, here and within myself. I could say almost every good thing I have (love? art? work? friends including those who don’t live here anymore? life?) is a result of moving to NYC. Or, I could say it’s because of the me I’ve had the chance to be here.

Holy shit New York, I love you 🌃 🍎 🗽 ♥️

Happy 14th birthday to my beautiful blueberry boy🫐

Blizzy boy is truly the sweetest, most affectionate, silly little noodle. He is constantly purring, climbing on top of me and his mama @shellsstells and wiggling his way into bags to thrash around. From stepping his precious lil beans across my laptop keys when I’m like editing to stealing all of his baby girl @lina_malina_ragdoll ‘s favorite sleep spots, he is endlessly affectionate and makes my life better every single day. Blizzy bunny was born when I was a teenager in high school, and now that I’m 30, it means I’ve been lucky enough to have his friendship across 3 decades and stages of life.

Here’s to many more, papa’s princess ♥️♥️
