The @southasianbeautycollective was born from the desire to see representation in the beauty industry for South Asians, who have long been overlooked.

I’m honoured to be part of the @britishbeautycouncil and thrilled to represent the British South Asian community and announce the launch of our nationwide campaign, “A Beauty Industry That Looks Like You,” crafted through months of diligent work by my remarkable Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity committee.

At the core of our initiative is The Beauty Census, is set to be the largest DEI survey of its kind by the British Beauty industry, welcoming participation from YOU: beauty enthusiasts and the 500,000-strong workforce in the UK.

Despite the industry’s gender balance and equal opportunities across the nation, there remains a scarcity of information regarding its demographics– crucial for driving change.

The survey invites input on representation, equity, education, inclusion, and belonging, aiming to shape a beauty industry that mirrors its consumers. We seek to understand if individuals feel valued, represented, and have access to desired career paths and products.

The campaign visuals include myself and fellow committee members, aiming to instill confidence in you that the survey has been meticulously designed to prioritise diversity, equity, and inclusivity from the outset, thereby allowing representative results.

The survey is completely anonymous, encouraging honest feedback to help gauge the current state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the UK beauty industry.

If you’re an investor or a bank considering where to focus your attention, you could do a lot worse to listen to some of the incredible stories shared by these female founders on @keepingface. And then you might just want to take that abacus out and add up the net worth of each of those businesses…Still wondering if we are worth investing in?

I’d like to thank each and everyone of the female founders who’ve taken the time and opened their hearts to share their stories with us. We recently organized a sip and paint surprise baby shower for one of our clients. The event itself was a true testament of the community living that Kilifi is.

Everything was organized with love and care and we couldn't be more honoured to be have been part of this amazing community.

It was a sip and paint in collaboration with @flora_alya and @_mayflowercreations_ .We had a dot mandala worshop, water colour painting session and a wine tasting segment led by our in-house sommelier @oguda_sheelah.

A huge thanks to @mcthefirst for being the master planner and buckets of congratulations to @alexia.inge!

Meet Kimani Gichuche the Executive director of Adili Solar Hubs Limited working in Longech, an area in the peninsula of #LakeTurkana. 🌴🐟💯🇰🇪

Kimani’s conviction came while visiting #Loiyangalani a place I love. This is when he decided to work in the community in the provision of cold storage for fishermen, creating jobs for youth through working in that specific value chain.

He invested his own funds to start Adili until he could access some seed funding to support the work he is doing. As we walked around he was greeted by the people, we were met by smiles and appreciation by the community to him especially for the water he now provides at Kshs.10 (It was at Kshs.80 before and was only available from mainland).

When we got out of the boat we were ferrying a fridge and a solar panel that we had carried from Lodwar. Immediately we arrived, he asked me to say hello to the men of the community and we proceeded into the chief’s office because they had something to say to Kimani. So when we sat down, the two men started, “we want to thank you for the work you’re doing, the water to the community and the chairs”. The chairs were being used for their meetings because before that they didn’t have any. Then the other gentleman proceeded to request on whether Kimani will help them build a toilet/latrine for the community....... yes a toilet/latrine. When we alighted from the boat there was human defecation almost everywhere and he kept telling me to look out for the landmines for they were everywhere. The smell also was unbearable in certain areas more than others. Simply put the place does not have toilets and we kept thinking how many problems does he have to deal with and there’s enough International NGO’s in the county. At least he should be working on building or fundraising for his startup. Anyway we went on to see the water purification facility, cold storage, the mini grid, the pumps, water well, local school, solar panels, their office quarters and yes they had a toilet.

The pair discussed some of the recipe for Cult’s early success and this quote from Alexia really resonated. So often, we’re held back by the notion that things have to be done a certain way. Unknowingly, Cult Beauty challenged norms and smashed boundaries. It went on to become one of the most successful online beauty retailers of all time, acquired by The Hut Group in 2021 for £275m 👀

It’s a great reminder that daring to defy conventional wisdom can lead to remarkable success. Cult Beauty's story teaches us that triumph often lies in being willing to blaze our own trail.
