It’s hard to believe that it’s been two weeks since the beginning of the SAF National Championship and World Finals. Pre fishing started out strong followed by ups and downs of the tournament. Day 1 we ended up with an empty bag. Day 2 we caught our three fish limit with a weight of 6lbs 15oz. Last Chance Friday bumped us into the World Finals on Saturday with a bag of 9lbs10oz. We fished alongside 30 other teams from around the world on Saturday, but didn’t do as well as we hoped. In the end, we placed 30th out of 437 teams!

Yesterday, the curtain closed on Cash’s quarter midget career and what a ride it has been!

I think back to to when we first started and surprised him with his first fire suit, that time we legitimately almost gave up, and the unfinished business being left on the table. I also think of all that we achieved, all the incredible moments, and all the people who entered our lives because of it. I was able to spend the last five years working side by side with my son and wife. We traveled countless hours together as a family and spent our time with some really incredible people who became our village. We raced all across the country and while no one wins as many as they would have liked, I can proudly say we went into every single race with integrity, a spirit of truly good sportsmanship, and giving every race, racer, and handler every drop of what we had. In a tear-filled private moment after his last race, I told Cash how proud I am of how far he has come as a wheelman in just the last couple years, how he conducted himself on and off the track, and that he never once used his front bumper out of anger or for personal gain. I reminded him he built incredible relationships with kids who will be lifelong friends, set a great example for the little guys, and was a humble winner and gracious loser every step of the way. All of which is one heck of a legacy to leave on. Watching those retiring drivers in the staging area with tear-filled eyes as they climbed into their cars to battle it out for the final time was tough to watch…then they went out and raced each other HARD in their final race. After the race, four of them lined up four-wide for one lap as a final show of love and respect for each other, then climbed out of their cars sobbing but hearts filled by all they have experienced together all these years.

We don’t know what the future holds for Cash and racing. We plan to take a much-needed break and just see where life takes us. For now, we are walking away with our hearts full and our tanks empty.

16 OUT! 🤙
