Divine timing truly exists. When I think of my great grandmother, I think of the capacity one has to impact generations after. In Wilma Jean Engebretson’s case, she leaves behind a century’s worth of lessons to be present and purposeful.

I had a short trip planned to catch up with my chosen family and see the Murakami exhibit. He is a huge artistic inspiration for me and who I chose as my biography assignment in the 4th grade, the same year I met @selmasaurus. Morning of, we received the news, and I had to decide if I’d let the bad weather and overwhelming feelings keep me from experiencing life. Selma, the only friend who was able to share some time with grandma, made sure that we took the day at the pace needed. This pushed my plans with my other friends later so I could rest and wait out traffic to drive back to the central coast at night, where I got home around midnight.

Upon arrival I noticed my neighbors mother who has dementia and only partial monitored supervision, wander out from her house. Luckily I had her daughter’s number because she had taken a liking to Zuko’s visits and was able to get her back in safely with the help of my bf who communicated with her in Spanish to keep her at ease.

Despite pushing my driving limits, something told me I needed to get home and would otherwise never choose to do the 500 mile trip in less than a day. Although my great grandmas physical presence may be gone, I know that I can always trust my gut instinct because that’s her way of keeping me on the right path. She’s right, the secret to life is, “Just keep on livin.”
