From the stage to the studio. ❤️

Following our recent performance of Freedom Square: The Black Girlhood Altar at @wirtzcenter, our Touring Company returned to campus for a day of movement, conversation, and exchange with students in the @northwesterndanceprogram.

In Dance Studies 101, Founder and Artistic Director @vershawnsandersward led a workshop exploring dance as a practice of listening, remembering, investigating, and imagining collective freedom, building from the questions at the heart of Freedom Square.

Company Members @alexkinard and @janiyapearso also led Modern Contemporary I through an Afro-Contemporary masterclass, sharing movement and choreography from the work.

We loved getting to continue the conversation beyond the stage and move with Northwestern’s next generation of dance artists. ❤️

Still thinking about the energy of Echoes of the Diaspora, the final showcase of our 2026 Summer Intensive.

After two weeks of training, creating, taking risks, and growing together, these emerging artists brought that journey to the stage. As our Touring Company prepares to return, we’re carrying that same spirit of curiosity and possibility into a new season.

More soon. 👀

As we step into the first day of Season 18, we’re taking a moment to honor the incredible support that carried us through Season 17.

To every audience member, donor, partner, artist, student, community member, and friend who showed up for Red Clay Dance Company: thank you.

Every bow holds more than applause. It holds the energy of everyone who helped make the season possible.

We’re grateful, we’re grounded, and we’re ready for what’s next. ❤️

Artivism is a spiritual collaboration. ✨ Swipe to hear Touring Company member @alexkinard reflect on Freedom Square.

In this clip from our post-performance talk at @mcachicago, Alex speaks to the profound potency of Freedom Square: The Black Girlhood Altar. Created in collaboration with @alongwalkhome, this work holds the vital stories and legacies of Black women and girls whose lives must be honored and remembered.

The stage holds so much more than the physical dancers. It carries a deep spiritual presence. Through our movement, we embody the legacies of those who have transitioned and hold space for the families who carry their memory forward. This collaborative energy makes the piece incredibly potent and speaks directly to the transformational elements of Artivism.

Bringing Freedom Square to life and performing at institutional venues like the MCA allows us to share this necessary, healing energy with the wider village.
