The first finished piece of artwork for my capstone. This piece features the amazingly talented Alex Kravchyna @alexkravchyna mirroring a powerful classic pose inspired by the ancient artifact, the Vaison Diadumenos, which channels a heroic warrior.

The back double bicep pose shows the different muscle groups working together. The traps lead to his shoulder blades then run into the middle and lower traps to create a shield-like shape that conveys a disciplined personality. The heroic spine is a shield that is associated with having a strong backbone and endurance.

To capture his discipline and physical attributes, dark compressed charcoal was used for the background. It is blended into a smoother, lighter contrast with a mix of gray and white, creating a glowing aurora almost as if he’s standing in a museum. By doing this I’m placing the muse into a timeless space as a permanent nature reserve.

The concept of chiaroscuro continuity is the balance between light and dark values to create an illusion of equal intensity.

A huge thank you to my fellow collaborator, @alexkravchyna @alexkravchyna_fit for his support, incredible discipline, and serving as the muse and the Anchor Piece.

The second part of this cohesive body of artwork deals with historic representation. In ancient art, sand is symbolic of strength and power. My muse and collaborator Alex Kravchyna @alexkravchyna @alexkravchyna_fit displays excellent craftsmanship, dedication and discipline.

I utilized soft compressed charcoal for a smooth undertone to get that dusty texture of the sand. This is called tonal gradation. I applied stippling with black colored pencils, a black marker and more charcoal sticks while mixing hatching and crosshatching with a graphite pencil which adds linear definition. Then I added final touch ups with a white Posca marker. By doing this I’m mimicking the process of how a sculptor lays out clay then carves out details with sharp tools.

This leads me to an amazing discovery and connection towards the process of this project which adds meaningful value. Kravchyna is a Ukrainian root word “kravets” which stands for tailor. A tailor is a person who measures, cuts, and crafts. It’s astounding how his last name aligns perfectly with my artistic creation for this piece. It’s a timeless, visual representation of the art and the personal identity of the muse.
