With just a little more than a week until pre-orders open, it's time for a reveal! We're thrilled to share our zine's incredible cover art, illustrated by the amazing @alexsipleart 💖‼️

The cutesy lovey-dovey heart shaped thing about knives by Alex Siple

Rated: 4/5 - Good

This is a love letter to the arts and the best possible execution of the book’s premise. AS writes about love and dedication in the face of death so well. So many things are on the precipice of dying in the book. Valeria’s career, her links to her home planet, her current identity, even the wider solar system as a whole. Dread looms over the book, ushered by the gorgeous kinesthetic prose that reads like you’re slowly being crushed by an enthusiastic crowd. Yet still the characters choose love, for each other, for skating, and for their lives in the face of imminent endings, which is deeply moving. AS strikes the perfect tone between realistic and hopeful.

I also have nothing but praise for the way obsessive dedication is portrayed. AS has always written about this topic well, and I loved reading a grittier portrayal of skating. The descriptions of the physical exertion of skaters to the violence their moves wreak on ice diverged from the typical media portrayal of ice skating (from what I have seen, anyways), which I found to be raw and perfect. I loved the commentary on the legacy of skating as a sport, and how artists haunt each other through time. AS is always so artistically knowledgable, and their references are well chosen and immaculately placed. The scene with Rachaminoff at the end could only be written by them.

The tributes to Yuri on Ice are well done. It avoids being flat or derivative of other work, and I love seeing Asian media referenced in English writing.

I do wish the “futuristic” aspect of the book was more obvious. Cultural practices, foods, references, and more seems almost indistinguishable from that of today or even the 2010s at times. Critiques against capitalism and such also sharply ramp up in the second half of the book, which made for a slightly jarring transition.

I get the impression this book will be one I come back to and read differently as life happens. For now, it is a clever, passionate pastiche with a complex couple and an undiluted love for skating. And that’s something @alexsiple should be proud of! #bookreview

Thank you to @arielcolonart and @jakepleshe for introducing me to lots of cool people, helping me navigate my first Lightbox Expo and just giving me some good company.

Thank you @visualatrium for being just a cool dude and sharing your experience, stories and what you have in the works.

Shout out to @robotpencil for taking a look at my character and creature work and giving some realistic but ultimately very encouraging feedback on the work and the industry. It gave me a good boost of motivation and hope in what can often be a tumultuous line of work.

I had a very small haul from this expo since I just didn't have much space in my bags but seeing all the wonderful, unique, idiosyncratic artwork was truly inspiring to me. The work of @alexsipleart really engaged me emotionally.

I'm coming next year with a much bigger bag 😈.
