Sent the summer off in the sweetest way possible by baptizing my babiest girl. A few weeks ago, I pulled the christening gown my grandmother sewed — a dress every baby girl in my family has worn — out of the closet and was immediately struck by a wave of grief. Since my grandmother died I’ve especially struggled with the fact that my children will never be held by her or experience an embrace that enveloped you with a peace only she was capable of giving. But knowing mama’s fingers touched the fabric draped on my baby made it feel like her hands were wrapped around my little girl. She used to say when God gives you a blessing give it back to Him. So that’s just what we did.

Mama taught me that true wealth is measured by the love of your community and that your village is strongest when faith is at its foundation. We have built a village that doesn’t play about our girls. One that has filled them with love and a sense of belonging. And we have instilled in them a strong faith as a guiding principle. One they are free to make their own as they grow.

On Saturday we filled our home with family and friends who have become just that. And mama’s spirit was without a doubt in the building.

It was certainly a 21st night of September to remember ✝️🙏🏽

I vividly remember telling all of these people we were expecting, then immediately wondering when they would meet our baby. We were in the thick of the pandemic with no end in sight and I worried my little one wouldn’t get to physically feel the love from the village we’d built — the people who would reinforce the foundation of love her parents crafted, who she’ll probably call to get her out of (and very likely into 🙃) trouble. When we got pregnant I felt confident our baby girl could be in any city and know she had family there. And despite the distance, our team showed up and showed out! Lenox became very used to seeing these smiling faces through the screen. I loved watching her perk up when she heard their voices. But nothing prepared me for the look on her face when she met her huge tribe of aunties and uncles IRL. So I’m bringing these beautiful faces to the feed. What a joy to watch the people who hold a huge place in your heart hold your heart in their hands 💕 #photodump #auntietour #ourtribe #blessedbaby #ittakesavillage
