Men with red heads and hands moved through Times Square in dark suits, holding fixed expressions and forming controlled groups. James Edward (@james____edward) developed the monte performance from Gilbert and George’s The Red Sculpture.

Gilbert and George first performed the work in Tokyo in 1975. Shaolin films and Kabuki informed the vermilion paint, formal clothing and restricted gestures. Across ninety minutes, the artists approached one another, separated, turned and held fixed positions as a single living sculpture.

How does the work change when two artists inside a gallery become eighty performers across public streets?

MONTE first expanded the performance during London Fashion Week. Theo Shaw, Ollie Hux, Alfie George, Jesse Vincent and Joshua Coppen joined the procession and published their own films and photographs. MONTE says the resulting posts received 350 million combined views.

The New York version included Dirk Willem Fourie, whose account centres on 1940s tailoring, and Hudson Rein. The cast and passersby circulated the first footage through their own accounts. MONTX released the official campaign films the following day.
