Geometry in color 🦋

Brian Alfred is an American contemporary artist whose work explores the landscapes, architecture and technology of modern life.

Inspired by photographs and digital imagery, he reduces the world around him into simplified shapes and flat fields of colour. His paintings often look almost computer-generated, creating an interesting bridge between traditional painting and the visual language of our digital world.

BRIAN ALFRED | TUSSLE MAGAZINE

Tussle Magazine has featured a wonderful review of Brian Alfred’s current solo exhibition, “Plus Ultra,” written by Taylor Bielecki.

“The empty stadiums, athlete portraits, jubilant celebrations, and moments of anticipation within his canvases are distilled into his signature graphic language of abstract forms and bold fields of color. Where the layers are exciting, the colors bounce off each other, and the newest addition of more transparent layers such as seen in the confetti in the piece titled Victory, Alfred pulls us into the scene. The resulting compositions within the paintings evoke a peculiar tension between stillness and excitement, with both the presence of figures and the implication of them.“

BRIAN ALFRED | 515 WEST 22ND STREET

“Throughout the show, Alfred’s works omit and omit again, only to circle back to this sense of perpetual anticipation. We are repeatedly brought into scenes on the cusp of something - empty stadiums waiting for gameplay, confetti that hangs midair, crowds that churn restlessly - and asked to consider what it means to stay at the threshold forever.”

— Samantha Chen in “Brian Alfred’s Plus Ultra”

Brian Alfred’s “Plus Ultras” will be on view till 14 August.

My TOP 5 Art Podcasts

5. Unstretched. A mix of shop talk with interesting critiques of the current art scene.

4. A Brush With. Focused on the inspiration and process of the artist’s practice. Check out the Andrew Cranston or Lisa Yuskavage episodes

3. Sound & Vision. Who hasn’t Brian Alfred interviewed? His angle is less about making the art than making the artist’s life. Start with the eps featuring Catherine Haggarty or Bo Bartlett.

2. Great Women Artists. The Lois Dodd and Paula Rego episodes are two of my favorites

1. Talk Art. Robert & Russell do a great interview because they have a true love for artists and art. Start with Dave Shrigley, Paul Smith or Tim Stoner.

Runner Ups
This Cultural Life - BBC podcast that follows various artist’s creative paths. The Frank Auerbach episode is brilliant.

Talking With Painters - An Australian podcast with current artists from down under. There’s quite a vibrant scene happening there.

I’d love to have you on my email list. I send out the occasional note about what is happening in the studio and we won’t have to depend on the algorithm to stay in touch. Type PUMP in the comments.
