Over Spring Break, some of our members spent their time in Washington DC and Columbus advocating on behalf of higher education. They were able to share their experiences with staffers, representatives, senators, and others. Some of the participants, including our President, were able to share their research with individuals involved in government. In addition, participants networked with alumni, visited monuments, and the African American History Museum. In DC, one of their main goals was to advocate against the Prosper Act, which is intended to negatively impact the distribution of the Pell Grant and federal loans. They also advocated for the University, with the announcement of Dr. Crawford’s new initiative, Boldly Creative. The students also partook in an amazing opportunity to present an award, on behalf of the university, to Congressman John Lewis who, in partnership with Western College, led the Freedom Summer of ‘64 initiatives. Big thank you to Randi Thomas and the Office of Institutional Relations, The Government Relations Network, Dean of Libraries Jerome Conley, Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School Jim Oris, Dr. Rodney Coates, and Dr. Greg Crawford for their efforts in putting together this wonderful opportunity for the 75 students who were able to partake in the Alternate Spring Break trip!
