Ode to Wellington - a poem about the 8 years I’ve spent living here over footage from across that time. This is my favourite city, always. 🤍🌱

Looking back at the year for Sweet Productions, we couldn’t be prouder! From the release of our first series, to live broadcasting, to working with exciting new talent… it’s been huge, and we’re so moved by the impact feedback we’ve had from audiences. This is why we do what we do 😍

Wheel Blacks: Bodies on the Line
This 3-part documentary series - our first ever commissioned project as a new company - finished filming, completed post, and hit the air on @skyopennz & @neon_nz in 2024! We’ve been blown away by the media and feedback this has attracted - thank you so much to all those who took the time to send us your amazing responses!

Live stream - World Wheelchair Rugby
An unexpected (and wonderful) addition to our year was running the live broadcast of the World Wheelchair Rugby final Paralympic Qualification Tournament for Sky Sport (@skynz). 8 nations competed over 5 days at the hotly contested event, hosted in Pōneke Wellington.

Click Bait & Crutches
A huge highlight for 2024 was getting to work with The D*List (@thedlistnz) - and exciting new voice Alice Mander (@alice_mander) - on this debut webseries for the platform. It was such a joy to create content by and for the disabled community, and to work with a shared kaupapa.

All Access Driving School
It’s so exciting to be underway filming our new 6-part series for Sky Originals! Driving plays a huge part in our independence, and following learner drivers with a diverse range of disabilities on their driving journey is already proving dramatic, fun, and emotional. We can’t wait to share this with you next year!

Of course, there’s been so much more behind the scenes (watch this space! 👀) An enormous thanks to everyone who has been part of our mahi this year - both in front of and behind the lens - and to those who have supported Sweet. It means the world to us! 🫶 🎬

last month, I was part of verb readers and writers festival and litcrawl. I got to discuss disability in young adult fiction and write a monologue about the trope of evil people having personality disorders. our litcrawl event about disabled villains was the second highest attended out of the 22 events that night and the monologues were all hilarious and so clever. it was so FUN and I’m SO lucky to be surrounded by so many deeply funny, intelligent, curious, powerful disabled writers 🫶 @verb_wellington

As promised, for those who were unable to attend our @verb_wellington LitCrawl event 'I'm disabled, of course I'm a villain' - you can find the link to the script for my piece in my bio. Bonus audio of me sounding like a goober attempting to re-read it.

Thanks so, so much to everyone involved. I was such a great event to be part of!

It’s an absolute pleasure to once again have Crip the Lit programming some of our 2024 events! 🙌 🤟 Crip the Lit advocates for Deaf and disabled writers of Aotearoa having their unique voices, perspectives and stories included and valued in mainstream writing. Formed in 2016 by Trish Harris and Robyn Hunt, Crip the Lit challenges stereotypes so that disability is represented and celebrated as part of the richness and diversity of humanity in all genres of literature, and in film, television and video.

In our main festival programme we have:
Disability Literati: Writing for children and young people on
Sunday 10th November, 10:30am–11:30am, Embassy Theatre.
Children's literature has a history of presenting disabled kids as life lessons, plucky objects of pity, grotesque enemies, or simply absent. Crip the Lit asks “Where do we find the disabled adventurers and learners, heroes and family members, written for disabled and non-disabled young people alike?” CtL artists Mandy Hager, Erin Donohue, and Helen Vivienne Fletcher talk about their writing process, their favourites, and what they want to see in the future. Chaired by Elizabeth Heritage. This is a mask-friendly event 😷 💕 Tickets only $15!

LitCrawl Crip the Lit event: I'm disabled ... of course I'm a villain!
Saturday 9th November, 7:15pm–8:00pm, Te Auaha, 65 Dixon St
From Richard III to Captain Hook to Dune's Baron Harkonnen, disabled and disability-coded villains have captivated and repulsed us. Can we find pride in the monstrous, or was ableism the real monster all along? Join us for some evil monologues as local disabled writers explore villains from literature, theatre, and screen. Feat. Andi C. Buchanan, Casey Lucas, Alice Mander, Erin Donohue, Rem Wigmore and Anna Kirtlan. Tickets are entry by donation ($5 suggested) ❤️
