Congratulations @unathimkonto! Winner of @nicolettafioruccifoundation Prize!

Selected by Yinka Shonibare for @frieze London Artist-to-Artist with @goodman_gallery.

Unathi Mkonto, nominated by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, draws from his recent exhibition ‘If Joburg had a beach, who would go?’, with fine-grained beechwood sculptural work drawing energy stored in the ocean floor, and city centres such as Johannesburg (Goodman Gallery).

Ceri Hand’s latest Extraordinary Creatives podcast is now live with an interview between our Artistic Director, Alice Sharp and Artist, Rana Begum, addressing the question: What Art Can Do About Climate Change?

“Who can imagine the future? It’s artists because you know it’s impossible to do anything about the future without imagining.” – @alicewsharp

What can art do about climate change that science, facts and frightening headlines can’t?

That question has driven curator Alice Sharp @alicewsharp for more than fifteen years. As Artistic Director of Invisible Dust @invisible_dust she has built an extraordinary body of work bringing leading artists and scientists together, not to illustrate scientific research, but to create something neither could have arrived at alone.

One of those artists is Rana Begum @ranabegumstudio, whose extraordinary sensitivity to colour, light, material and architecture has shaped a practice spanning painting, sculpture and installation. For Climate Clock, Alice paired Rana with glaciologist Alan Hubbard. His footage of glaciers breaking apart and collapsing into the sea became the catalyst for Rana’s monumental work made from locally sourced stone that somehow manages to evoke both the weight and the fragility of ice.

And together we explore a much bigger question: if information alone isn’t changing our behaviour, can artists help us feel our way towards a different future?

Join us in Madrid on Thursday, October 1st as we hear firsthand from Alice Sharp @alicewsharp, Artistic Director of @Invisible_Dust. In this evening conversation held in English, Alice will share about Invisible Dust’s impactful work across distant, but not unrelated, geographies advocating for public art, cultural partnerships, and engaging with responsible and collaborative practices across the arts and sciences.

Supported by the @BritishCouncil as part of a specialized micro-residency at the Institute for Postnatural Studies, this public program invites cultural instigators, curators, artists, scientists, activists and organizers based in Madrid and its vicinity to think together about new pathways for collaboration among cultural agents as well as enhanced methods of response to crisis-stricken contexts.

Invisible Dust develops ambitious collaborations between leading artists and scientists, working to inspire UK and global audiences to engage critically with pressing environmental issues — treating art not as illustration of climate data, but as a way of generating new thinking and public understanding around ecological crisis. Currently active in Brazil, Turkey, Finland, France and the UK, the organization has worked with artists including Elizabeth Price, Wangechi Mutu, Jeremy Deller and Raqs Media Collective, alongside scientific partners such as Oulu University, the Natural History Museum and Imperial College London.

“And if we continue looking down at our phones and lose our relationship with nature’s time we will lose not only relationship with the earth but with ourselves.” – @alicewsharp, CHART public programme

As the days get colder in the N Hemisphere do we still reflect on the change of the seasons? Alice was recently in-conversation with Rasmus Nielsen, one third of Danish artists group @superflexstudio as part of leading Nordic art fair, CHART in Copenhagen; their discussion focussed on the ideas of ‘Climate Clock’, connecting to stories and myths on time - seasonal change, movement of the sun across the sky, and before clocks, church bells marking time. Exploring ‘Super Kello’ created by SUPERFLEX, a beautiful permanent stone sculpture which emits audio one word per minute for ten years, a Finnish version of the Odyssey read by a local fisherwoman.

“Our world has become one where seconds not even minutes matter. A machine-time world which is damaging our relationship to the planet and each other. Danish artists group SUPERFLEX have created a new work ‘Super Kello’ (Kello is both bell and clock in Finnish) which draws us back to a time before machines, to a time of myths.” – Invisible Dust’s Artistic Director, @alicewsharp, discussing a new commission by artist group @superflexstudio for @chart_artfair’s Curatorial Notes Journal (see the link in our Bio to the full text).

Alice Sharp will be in conversation with Rasmus Rosengren Nielsen from SUPERFLEX at CHART in Copenhagen on Sunday 30 August.

CHART and @vonbartha will also present a large-scale project by SUPERFLEX in the centre of Tivoli Lake, continuing the fair’s ambition to inspire new reflections on the environments we share.

Alice Sharp recently collaborated with SUPERFLEX on their new marine landmark ‘Super Kello’ for Climate Clock @oulu2026official. Super Kello provides the residents of Kello, a harbour in Haukipudas, with a place to sit, rest, and consider other ways to measure time. This bell-shaped stone sculpture faces out to sea like a light house, connecting the marine world to land; building a bridge between the underwater ecosystem of the fish and aquatic life and human habitation in nearby human dwellings. It welcomes fishing boats, sailing boats and leisure craft into the safety of the harbour.
