Fletcher Jones. Yves. Adidas. A kilt. Uniforms by design. Le Louvre. History handwritten on paper moulds. All rolled and tied with scraps of fabric. Every mould creates a garment. A skirt someone wore to work. A uniform. A dress for that special moment in life. If only these moulds could speak… what would they tell us? They sit here quietly waiting for their next adventure. So beautiful and so… unknown. What does their future hold when the workshop closes? Hidden beauty. That’s what I discovered the day I saw Avril Buchanan present her ISS Institute George Alexander Fellowship report on her time spent at Global Pleating in Alexandria, Egypt. She learnt how to make pleating moulds and brought that skill back to Melbourne, to Speciality Pleaters. The size, the scale, the beauty... The immense beauty. It was breathtaking. And so unknown. I mean, how do we not know these exist? What a travesty! It ignited something in me. What else don’t we know about the making of our clothes? What else is there to uncover? But that’s a bigger story. For the moment, I’m delighted to share that The Art of Pleating, the inaugural short film from The Artisanal Collective, directed by Clare Press, premieres at Melbourne Fashion Week on Wednesday 21 October. All 180 tickets have now been allocated! Wonderful news, although I’m sorry for those who missed out. As it’s a free event, some places may become available. Today is Marc Daniel Wasiak’s anniversary it will be 5 years at 6pm tonight. Wow it’s like yesterday then also not … is funny time . Marc will never be forgotten , he genuinely touched so many souls with his creative light ,crazy fun, energy and cheeky personal style ,his way of approaching everything he did was with positivity,flare and creativity . I sometimes thought he’d not do things on time then he’d deliver more to me than I ever dreamed of . We created endlessly since meeting each other so much fun he was the most wildly creative soulmate lv ever had the pleasure of knowing x The world truly lost a significant force today 5 years back ,so many people loved him,many still carry that energy forward .So Please at 6 pm tonight , raise a glass or 5 .Think of Marc ….laugh ,chat and remember him. There is no point in being so serious he’d say ..there are so many great things people and projects we can do in this world . Basically l think it comes as some one famous said ‘Step by Step ! My vidilogettes from a visit to Andrew Delaney's "Frankenstein" exhibition at LCI, a mustmustmustsee for lovers of his haunting sculptures. Andrew was inaugural recipient of the Marc Wasiak Foundation art prize, a competition to honor its legendary namesake and which I was chuffed to judge with a panel of luminaries last year. Andrew's work for that submission was joltingly strange, inexplicably sad. He's evolved his process even further in this exhibition, building his evocative Frankenesque characters from fabrics ripped, decayed, stiffened with age and a grim greeny-grey palette of filth and mould. They're hollowed but not, faceless but not, each one a soft invitation to insert your own meanings and life experience. I drew melancholic connections to the strange world we live in now, the global swell of fear that humanity is lost to $$$$$, and my own longing for a return to empathy, kindness and values that embrace and nurture us all. Here Andrew discusses his creative practice with LCI's marvellous academic director, Adriano Di Prato and the Marc Wasiak Foundation's Gerard O'Connor and Alida Milani. Also - Moi.
