#TBT 30 years ago today, the hip hop duo M.O.P. their second album released💽"Firing Squad" on October 22nd, 1996 by Relativity Records. It was produced by DJ Premier, Big Jaz, Ali Dee, M.O.P. & Laze E Laze and it also features a guest appearance from Kool G Rap. Conceived as an escalation of the raw, militant sound established on their first album, Firing Squad was designed to intensify themes of Brownsville pride, street survival, and unyielding aggression, positioning M.O.P. as the "voice of the streets." The title drew from a "firing squad" metaphor, symbolizing a coordinated, relentless lyrical assault on rivals and societal challenges, much like an execution squad eliminating threats.

The album's production highlights contributions from DJ Premier of Gang Starr, who handled several key tracks including the title track "Firing Squad," "New Jack City," and "World Famous," infusing the record with gritty, sample-heavy boom bap beats that amplify M.O.P.'s intense, shouting delivery. The 18-track project, running approximately 65 minutes, builds on the duo's debut To the Death (1994) with an emphasis on raw, aggressive East Coast hip hop, featuring themes of street life, confrontation, and Brownsville pride. Firing Squad debuted on the US Billboard 200 at number 94 in late 1996, marking its peak position on the all-genre albums chart. On the genre-specific Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, it performed stronger, reaching a peak of number 12 and spending four weeks on the chart, bolstered by robust support from urban radio stations and the duo's growing East Coast fanbase. #FiringSquad
