Half Broken Sigil set to score Suzan Pitt’s ‘Asparagus’ (1979, USA) tonight, a film historically screened before David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’ on the midnight movie circuit. ‘Asparagus’ is an avant-garde short masterpiece of surrealism with a feminist exploration of public/private life

‘Asparagus’ examines identity in relation to society, foregrounding gender, spectacle & art, and tensions of psychic placelessness in a lonely atomizing cityscape of consumerism and bedroom communities. While an answer remains unclear, the titular asparagus and a variety of lush vegetation suggest a psychic return to nature, whether in erotic or scatological unveilings…

Half Broken Sigil is a Miami improvising ensemble bridging sounds from folk, jazz, noise, and classical. Using an experimental ad-hoc approach the band will interpret Pitt’s message with their own batch of sonic surrealisms. Featuring members of Putty Knife, Alien Waste Matter, and Opposition Dolls, as well as local UM Frost jazz students and a local noise veteran, the group defy a traditional approach

Rounding out a guest host for Kinoplex movie night, this live, improvised score will follow an itinerary featuring ‘Motel’ (1989, USA), Christian Blackwood’s documentary on obscure American motel business life and their strange denizens

Come catch these oddities and more tonight at Churchill’s Pub!
