From a couple years ago when Amir was taking a lot of private lessons from me. Gave him a crash course in Balanchine technique at the beautiful Align Ballet Method studio @alignballetmethod. He had received most of his training at the Royal Ballet school. A good school, but not teaching Balanchine technique. Mr. B’s glissades are always the hardest thing to master. I notice these days practically everywhere, (except for Vaganova Russian training), you’ll find lots of energy for glissades (as he taught), but the legs are way too far apart. Like so many things “Balanchine,” there are misunderstandings and misinterpretations. It’s like a religion. After the founder dies lots of little things get changed. Even at the NYC Ballet and affiliate school, SAB, much has been lost/altered (and Peter Martins’ hubris is mostly to blame). Balanchine expected this, but it’s hard for me to accept given my personal relationship (all well documented in my book). Don’t forget when he brought me to NYC at age 19, one of the first things he did was to have me teach at SAB…and I did until I left the company at 27 to found my own LA company, but he brought me back several years to guest. Amir gets really close here (took me a year to get them the way he wanted), and your feet can get really tired. BUT, they also get sharper and stronger; so definitely worth the effort. @arielitorose @amiruddinshah_official @adamsklute @georgebalanchinetrust @georgebalanchinefoundation @roman.julian.mejia @chunner @jovani.furlan @jaralanerayraderman @joannastaudinger #ballet #nycballet #sab

My four year ballet-versary. Four years since I stepped into my first ballet class at @balletacademyofcharleston and became an obsessed ballerina. I’ve taken classes in seven cities with numerous amazing teachers and met the funnest, most talented, most fearless group of friends I could have hoped for. It’s given me so much (a new wardrobe, life lasting friendships, an appreciation for the most impressive talents, strong ankles, belief in myself). Not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t discovered my true love in this clearly not-dying art/sport. So many experiences still to come. #adultballet #sanfrantastic #being50aintsobad

Always grateful for the chance to learn from Michael Cornell. Every class reminds me that dance is more than technique—it’s grace, calm, and elegance. Thank you, Michael, for sharing your knowledge with such generosity.

Thank you, Michael Cornell, for taking the time to coach me, to be fully present, and to so generously share your knowledge and expertise. Learning from someone with your experience is a privilege, and I value these moments more than you know. I leave the studio not only a better dancer, but a more inspired one. Truly grateful. 🙏
