“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. John 17

The ingredients are easier than you think!

1. Simplicity. Family dinner doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, some of the healthiest meals are often the simplest. Single-ingredient foods are usually cheaper, more filling, and better for you than processed convenience foods.

2. Predictability. Have a set time. When dinner happens consistently, it creates a healthy rhythm in the home. It’s the signal that the work of the day is winding down and the family is coming back together.

3. Personality. Put away the phones. Turn off the TV. Remove the distractions. The people sitting across from you are more important than whatever is happening on a screen.

4. Intentionality. Use the table for more than eating. Ask intentional questions. Share victories and struggles. Pray together. Make eye contact. Listen well. Build relationships one conversation at a time.

5. Spirituality. And don’t underestimate what happens when children hear their parents pray. The dinner table may be one of the greatest discipleship tools in your home. Long before they learn to pray in public, they’ll learn by listening to Mom and Dad talk to God over a meal.

Strong families aren’t built in a day. They’re built day after day around ordinary tables having meaningful conversations. Sure, you won’t remember every meal that you eat or every conversation that you have, but you will be sustained and shaped for healthy life from each and everyone nonetheless.

Wishing the happiest of mothers days to my incredible wife. Siena is blessed beyond measure with a loving mom, patient teacher, master chef, tour guide, fashionista, baby doll nurse, walking encyclopedia…and that doesn’t even scratch the surface. Parenting is fun when I get to do it with you.
