A while back, Nikki sat down with Alison Davidson, editor of The English Home, to talk about what actually makes a brand useful to her team 👀 With more than 30 years in home and lifestyle publishing, Alison had plenty to say on everything from image quality and lead times to expert comment and the way her team uses Press Loft when planning features. A few things that stuck with us: ⭐️ Understand the title before you pitch it. The English Home has a very clear point of view. Traditional, heritage-led and premium will always have a better chance than something that feels too contemporary or off-brand, no matter how strong the pitch is. ⭐️ Missing one deadline doesn’t always mean missing out altogether. Print lead times can be tight, but there may still be opportunities online, in newsletters, future issues or other editions. Christmas is a perfect example, with different deadlines across the main issue, supplement and US edition! ⭐️ Low-res imagery just creates more unnecessary work. If a journalist has to come back and chase for a usable file, that extra step can be enough to slow things down and cost you a coverage slot. High-res, easy-to-access imagery really does matter. ⭐️ Don’t underestimate the value of your expertise. Beautiful products can earn attention, but useful insights on the industry, emerging trends or shifts in consumer behaviour give journalists something they can come back to later too.
