I’m taking 3 months off of playing bass. Here’s what happened.

After moving to LA in March 2025, and going out every night for 6 months straight to get gigs, the pain in my thumbs started. At the same time I finally started getting consistent calls. I played through it from August-November 2025 before I decided I couldn’t ignore the pain anymore. An MRI showed partially torn UCLs in both thumbs. For the last year, I tried healing while playing less. No upright bass. Less 5 string. More keybass.

One good thing to come out of this was the opportunity to gain skillz and confidence on keybass. It was something I knew I needed to do anyway. This was actually the perfect excuse because keybass doesn’t hurt my hands (mostly).

It’s been an amazing 1.5 years in LA and I’m lucky to have done so much. But I’m tired of the limbo. I want to play upright bass again. I don’t want to keep asking bandleaders’ permission to play keybass. It sucks turning down gigs you want to play but shouldn’t.

It is time to rest.

10. Playing @andys_weho and many other LA clubs
11. Getting to sub at various churches
12. A weekender with @mostlykosher
13. Witnessing a couple of my best friends’ city hall marriage in Beverly Hills
14. MDing for @weareblitznation
15. Opening for @jason_mraz with @henryhcornell
16. Got sexier.

There are so many more things I could put here but I’ll cap it for this post! HUGE thanks to all the friends and musicians I’ve gotten to hang, play, and develop camaraderie with! It means so much to me.

What a night for the arts! This year’s Alex Frank Poetry Night on 4/29 had our largest participation and attendance to date!

Many members of the Roeper community gathered for an inspiring evening of creative expression. The night featured incredible student performances across poetry, improv, imagery and storytelling.

We were thrilled to welcome alumna Alison Albrecht (‘18; pictured with the guitar) to the stage – she made the evening even more special by performing one of her new singles.

The event beautifully honored the spirit of Alex Frank (‘95) and showcased the depth of talent within our community.
