@alixvossieg is the brilliant photographer behind many of my favorite series: Palermo, Studio Life, Summer Holidays in Italy. We met at boarding school as teenagers; she is home to me.

Whenever I’m in Paris, I stay with her. We chat, rest, flip through photography books. I’ve watched her work evolve over the past two decades, so I asked her about the books that stayed, the ones that count.

She Shares:

“These four books are very dear to me. Each one has taught me something about photography and about the way I look at things.

Bernd & Hilla Becher — Wassertürme
I love the simplicity and precision of their work. Photographing the same kind of structure again and again taught me how repetition can reveal differences, details and beauty.

Irving Penn — En Passant
Penn taught me so much about light, composition and simplicity. I love the way he could photograph the most ordinary things and make them feel beautiful and important.

Joel Meyerowitz — Morandi’s Objects
A very quiet and beautiful book. Meyerowitz photographs the simple objects that surrounded Morandi. It reminds me how much can be found in everyday objects when we really take the time to look.

Georgia O’Keeffe / Alfred Stieglitz
I love the intimacy of this book and the connection between two artists. Stieglitz’s photographs of O’Keeffe feel very personal, and together their work speaks beautifully about looking, closeness and creativity.

These are books I often return to. They have helped me learn photography in a very simple way: to slow down, observe, and pay attention. “

Thank you my dear friend, I feel so lucky to see the world change through your eyes and keep tangible memories of it all. 🧡🌞

Personal notes on finding inspiration in Sicily:

What I actually love about being away from my studio and the making is that I finally have a lot of time to observe. I have to be in a certain mood to observe, I need a lot of time and I need to be in silence.

I first try to understand the atmosphere, what is creating it, how I feel and if I move around in the same space and look at things from different angles does the way I feel change? I then zoom in, what is the balance between volumes and empty spaces? What details have I seen somewhere else? … I can go on for a while

My mother’s family is Sicilian and I have been coming to our family house on and off for the past 36 years, observing a place that you know while having months and sometimes years of absence is a very interesting exercise. Growing up the body relation to spaces and objects changes, memories stratify and evolve.

This year I have been connecting with my mother’s objects, she has been collecting eggs for a while and here in Sicily she has quite a few. My great Uncle Ignazio Moncada is from here and he is one of my major inspirations in terms of color combinations.

What I love about Sicily in the summer is that it is so hot that time actually stops and finally feels very long again even as an Adult.

Mother’s Day…

I normally don’t post about motherhood. It’s a difficult word for me. For years, I thought I was a terrible mother because I wasn’t able to nurse my child.

The balance between work and family is an ongoing inner battle, where guilt keeps creeping in… Despite what everyone seems to tell you, I found nothing natural about becoming a mother.

It felt like a beautiful journey shared with a stranger and the more you move forward, the more extraordinary it becomes. 🤍

To all mothers who feel awkward, lost, or out of place: Happy Mother’s Day.
