Thank you to everyone who came to COLLECTING BLACK ART at @sohohouse Greek St on Wednesday! What a way to kick off Frieze week! We were blessed with the brilliant minds that are @justkimberly, @faridahf , @ebeleokobi & @darkartabiola and our founder @aliyahhasinah for a candid and future focused conversation on collecting and custodianship. Many gems were shared from the panel and audience including the importance of divesting from existing exploitative Eurocentric art markets and building culturally affirming and enriched living collections. Citations: Art does not exist without its references. Artists have a spiritual responsibility to share their citations and emphasize the lineage and environment from which they came. Black Curatorial presents a meditative installation in @friezeofficial’s Reading Room. Following its presentation at Venice Bienniale’s Grenada Pavillion, Bajan artist and filmmaker @russell._watson brings his mixed media diptych BG4202301 1M-A / BG4202301 IM-B to London. Watson’s work animates an imagined ecosystem of beings and landscapes across cosmic, primordial and aquatic space and time. A reading list curated by Russell Watson & @aliyahhasinah are available to purchase on site to build wider reference to the ideas fueling art and life in the Caribbean. Russell’s work is accompanied by @georgiasemple’s original works Pythagor’s Check & Pythagor’s Mate exploring faith, Guyanese heritage, addiction and embodied Christian spirituality. We’re very excited to be exhibiting original works, selling prints and books by Caribbean & African authors. Including @alara.books new project TRAFFIC WISDOM, available from Wednesday at Frieze. Our print store is also stocked with works from @stormsaulter, @stricklyakilah, @alanisforde & @myah.jeffers alongside our limited edition Black Curatorial Tote bags. Happy Frieze week!
