Lesung und Gespräch mit A. L. Kennedy

Moderiert von Beatrice Faßbender
Deutsche Lesung: Marit Beyer

Mittwoch, 15. April | 19.30 Uhr

Opening Lines is the book podcast from BBC Radio 4 that takes – of course - the opening lines of a classic book, often a modern one, and uses those lines as a springboard for a discussion about the book and the author.

A recent corker scrutinised by presenter John Yorke’s beady eye is THE GIRLS OF SLENDER MEANS by Muriel Spark published in 1963 but set in the summer of 1945 : ‘Long ago in 1945 all the nice people in England were poor, allowing for exceptions’

It’s a magnificent opening section describing bomb-damaged London, the stripped back houses like a stage set, sometimes a lavatory chain dangling down over nothing.

A group of young women live, love and lodge together in the shabby but respectable May of Teck Club in the months between VE Day and the ending of the war 99 days later with the final victory in Japan. The Club is for women (are they really savage’?) under the age of 30 who are “obliged” to live apart from their families – doing war work perhaps – passing round a Schiaparelli evening gown for a longed for dinner date – if they can fit into it. The girls of Slender Means has many meanings, one being whether they can slip through the attic window for assignations and more.

Yet the book is not what it seems – in the opening sections, news of the death of a missionary in Haiti is passed on by phone by one middle aged woman to another. It’s a riveting yet disconcerting read - simple, yet knotty and complex, it packs a moral punch, typical of Spark. At 144 pages, she apparently wrote it in one sitting, and you can certainly read it in one afternoon.
With outstanding insight from writer AL Kennedy : she says Spark’s sentences are perfect..she loves her community of women... John explores the pleasures of this short yet wonderfully satisfying novella.

This is such an interesting programme – do listen! Find it on @bbcsounds

Congratulations to Edward Carey (@edwardcareyauthor) on the publication of his novel ‘Edith Holler’!

It is an entrancing fable of a young woman’s struggle to escape her family’s control and to craft her own creative destiny.

‘Edith Holler is an extraordinary achievement: funny, troubling, playful, magical and vastly energetic sometimes all at once.’ - AL Kennedy
