How China Lives in the World
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., a form of communal housing has long provided an affordable way for Chinese immigrants to live in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
Single-room occupancy (SRO) buildings offer small private rooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms. In a city where the average studio rents for around $2,700 a month, SROs remain one of the few affordable housing options for Chinese immigrants who want to stay close to their community.
Lei Huang, an AI scientist who grew up in Guangzhou, pays less than $1,000 a month to live in an SRO and immerse himself in the local Chinese community.

“I want to remind people we are here. This is on our terms.” That is the spirit at the heart of @nowplacesf, a new community space in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Offering everything from workshops on visa issues to Mahjong nights, Now Place works to support AAPI artists and foster human connection. It is run by @akaa.null, a queer artist and immigrant from China.
