Det er over, se acabó!

I was recently asked how I manage being a doctor and a skier at the same time. I was also asked if jet lag affects me since I flew in 1 day before this race. Honestly, I live in constant exhaustion and don’t remember what “normal” feels like anymore. 😂

I tend to be really hard on myself, but this year I learned to practice more self compassion and accepted my circumstances for what they are. Thankfully I’m surrounded by friends and family who ground me and remind me that there’s nothing ‘normal’ about what we’re going through in residency.

The life of an emergency medicine resident is a life of:
-80 hr work weeks flipping back and forth between days and nights
-24 hr shifts every third day
-Embracing death on a daily basis and having to keep seeing patients afterwards
-Taking full responsibility over someone’s life
-Carrying the weight of your mistakes on your shoulders

Nothing about this life is “normal,” but I am grateful because reaching new extremes of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion have made me stronger and grateful to be alive. This season was 10 days & 2 races long. I skied fueled by passion, purpose, and a big smile on my face because those are the only things that I have left in the tank these days.

While my circumstances as a skier are FAR from ideal right now, they give me a hunger to keep pushing my limits. The race results were bitter sweet. But, like everything in life, this too shall pass: life outside of residency is just around the corner. So here’s a few pictures of the joy and privilege that I got to enjoy for 4 days.

And, to answer your questions in logistical terms:
-I roller ski in Miami
-I focused on technique over fitness this year given time constraints
-For coaching, I I used my vacation time to travel to Norway and, because I ran out of vacation, one of my coaches flew to Miami
-My awesome coresidents and program supported me with a wilderness medicine elective in vermont (a fun post on those work details is coming soon) 🙃

Ski ya later, alligator… this is only the beginning 😉🐊

Thank you to @langlaufschuleachensee @andrewattski @femeski @hklabben @marwesports @bones_sports for believing in me!
