How much can you learn about a character by watching them take four steps? Legendary Disney animator Andreas Deja explains why a simple walk cycle is often the first test an animator performs when developing a character. Timing, weight, bounce, and posture can reveal an entire personality before a single word is spoken.

When animating Jafar in Aladdin, Andreas took inspiration from Jonathan Freeman’s vocal performance, giving the villain a distinctive glide that Andreas describes as moving on roller skates.

Want to try it yourself? Animate a character taking four steps, then repeat the exercise while changing how they move. Same character, entirely different personality.

How did Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends come to life?

Craig McCracken shares how adopting shelter dogs with his wife, Lauren, inspired the idea of a foster home for imaginary friends, and how one conversation with Cartoon Network executive (and friend of the vod!) Linda Simensky led to the spontaneous creation of Mac.

Sometimes, all it takes is a notebook, a great idea, and someone asking, “But is there a kid in it?”
