Today we went to the Queens Reading Rooms at Chatsworth and what the helly, the actual Queen turned up! Such a well kept secret but what an amazing surprise!

She even interrupted the interview with Kate Atkinson but of course she can, she’s the Queen!

The amazing Kate Atkinson. An amazing female author who has written so many incredible books. What an interesting, articulate, fascinating women!

A beautiful set up. Not a plastic chair in sight. Cosy squishy sofa’s and gorgeous blankets.

And of course Kate Atkinsons beautiful new book on the coffee table.

We could get anywhere near the interview with Lee Child. He was a very popular choice!

This would have been fab to listen to but we only caught the end. Larry Lamb & Giles ‘in conversation’

The one thing I love about this event is the diversity of the talks. This lady is the editor at Bloomsbury and we heard all about her fascinating career and what her job entails.

I drive through Chatsworth all the time but don’t really appreciate what’s on our doorstep until I visit inside 🤍

Nothing finer than a Chatsworth event when the sun shines☀️

Obviously there was a champagne bar 🥂

A quick walk around the gardens and even the fountain came out for us 💧

Her majesty’s preferred mode of transport 🚁

The copter was pristine, it looked like it had been polished within an inch of its life 🫧

Who remembers the long hot summer of 1976? For me it was playing in the stream at the bottom of the garden, staying outside until it was nearly dark, lying under just a sheet as my mum billowed it, and the salty smell of my grubby knees.

I was the same age as Frank (9), the main character in Trouble Was by @charlotteedwardes and this novel brought back so many memories for me.

But that’s not the only reason I loved it - the writing is wonderful, and somehow Edwardes manages to give us just enough information to understand what is going on, even while Frank doesn’t.

We first meet him in a car with his two younger siblings as his mother is driving them to his aunt’s farmhouse in the West Country, and we learn that when his mother takes to her bed, it is up to Frank to look after Odette and Patrick. As adults, we understand what isn’t explained to the child: the adultery, how his aunt doesn’t want them there, and that the squalor they’re living in isn’t right. (There’s a terrible scene where Frank brings a friend home who is disgusted by the things wriggling in the sink.) The story is slight and slow, pleasurably so, and which is how it should be, if you’re spending time in a long hot summer.
