There's a lot on the menu in this renovated 1950s California ranch home. We worked with the owners to open up the kitchen, dining, and living areas while preserving the home they love. White cabinets, a bold teal backsplash, a dining table with a starburst chandelier overhead, colorful art, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass all come together under one vaulted ceiling, with high windows bringing daylight in from above.

A great entry should feel like an invitation. At this Montecito home, stone steps lead through a lush yard where the trees filter the light and the low roofline sits quietly behind the canopy. It is the kind of approach that slows you down and lets you take it all in before you reach the door.

We spend a lot of time thinking about how people arrive at a home, because the entry is the handshake of the design. From a bright pop of color to a quiet stone path, every arrival sets its own tone.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

When our clients found this 1950s mid-century home near the beach in Carpinteria, they knew it was the perfect place to settle down and retire. The original home had classic mid-century character and an opportunity to create a stronger connection to its coastal surroundings.

Working thoughtfully within the existing footprint, we expanded the sense of space and opened the interiors to the landscape. Large glass doors, custom woodwork, and playful color complement the home’s original fifties bones while making it feel distinctly personal to the people who live there.

For us, a successful project is about honoring what’s already there while creating a home that feels comfortable, personal, and connected to its environment.

The staircase as art.
The staircase: the ultimate expression of an architect, an innovative thought, that expresses itself throughout the entire home… curves only.

🍻 Green Building Happy Hour is back!

This year, we’re kicking off Carbon Smart Construction, a new happy hour series from 3C-REN, @aia_santabarbara , and @ccgreenbuildingcouncil.

First up: embodied carbon, cement, steel, and bio-based materials — next Thursday** at AIA Santa Barbara.

Come grab a drink, meet some local building and design folks, and learn a little more about how the materials we choose can impact the carbon footprint of a project.

And this is just the first one! We’ve got a whole series planned through November, including an all-electric ADU tour.

👉 Swipe to see all of the events in the series!

📅 Thursday, September 24
⏰ 5:30–7:30 p.m.
📍 AIA Santa Barbara

First week of September in review🍂

Exterior Landscaping at our Crescent Hacienda project is coming together

The garage is nearly complete, look how stunning the copper gutters and custom wood doors turned out!

This is our version of a “fit check” in the design industry, walking through each project before the long weekend

Very into our branded dad caps recently🧢

Custom matchboxes for our clients (our hummingbird Sage project is sketched on the front)

Redesigning our living mood boards for the fall

We believe even our office deserves a theme

Visiting our Canyon Ridge project, it’s crazy to believe we’re only a few months until completion!

This custom fireplace was a labor of love and it’s incredible watching it to come to life

Wait until you see the transformation coming for this entryway

Ending the week at the Santa Barbara farmers market. Missing my partner in crime SUSAN and very ready to get her back into the office and back into these photos!!!!

At Stinson Beach, a house sits on the edge of a lagoon in the Marin County beach town.

NICOLEHOLLIS collaborated with CCS Architecture to renovate a small cottage into a family weekend retreat, weaving the modern with the nostalgic. The remodeled kitchen anchors the property through its connection to the lagoon-facing deck, where a large dining table and matching benches look out across the water.

In Stinson Beach, a 2,200-square-foot cottage on the lagoon weaves the modern with the nostalgic. NICOLEHOLLIS collaborated with the Bay Area family and CCS Architecture to renovate this weekend retreat for kayaking days, casual gatherings, and the microclimates that shift from morning fog to fire-lit evenings.
