This guy has been a ghost for most of the rut compared to years past. He seems to normally disappear for 3-4 weeks at the start, but generally is pretty regular by late September/early October. Unfortunately that isn’t the case this year, but I finally found him one day a couple weeks ago. He’s broken off part of his right main beam, which is really unfortunate since I was hoping to get more shots of him this season since this is definitely his biggest year so far. But, still blessed to have gotten some shots of this incredible buck!

Blackbellies drying off and preening. The one at the top surely isn’t making any friends. I wonder what that bottom bird yelled after he got splashed.

Sorry I’ve been slacking lately y’all. I’ve been busy shooting/editing for work projects and haven’t been wanting to put the time into digging through footage and editing it. I’ll try to get things back to a normal schedule. On a positive note, I’ve got a bunch of awesome stuff I’ll be editing shortly, stay tuned!

In Florida, removing invasive species is only part of the equation. What happens after removal matters, too.

Managing invasive iguanas and pythons is tedious, difficult, and necessary work to help protect Florida’s native wildlife and ecosystems—especially throughout South Florida and the Everglades.

Hunting and removal provide an important wildlife management tool. But these animals can also become a resource rather than simply going to waste.

@pythoncowboy has found a way to take it to the next level. Mike has combined his passion for training and working with his dogs and removing the invasive species of Florida.

For iguanas, that means utilizing as much of the animal as possible.

👉🏼 The meat can be harvested as a source of wild protein.
👉🏼 The skins can be cleaned, tanned, and transformed into leather goods.
👉🏼 Removing invasive animals helps reduce pressure on native plants, wildlife, and habitat.

That’s sustainable use in practice: taking a necessary management action and finding responsible ways to utilize the resource created by it.

The same broader principle applies to invasive-species management across Florida. Whether managing iguanas or removing invasive Burmese pythons from the Everglades, the goal is healthier ecosystems and greater protection for native species.

Management doesn’t always look glamorous. Sometimes it means long hours in the field removing animals that don’t belong on the landscape.

And when those animals can be responsibly utilized rather than wasted, conservation comes full circle.

Manage the problem. Utilize the resource. Protect the ecosystem.
