Over My Head I Hear Freedom In the Air
A celebration of the life and legacy of
✨Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon✨

“I was here before I came and when I die, I am not leaving” Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon

My life’s path was and continues to be shaped by her sound and teachings.

Thankful to my beautiful beloved sister @toshireagon and family for the blessing to learn and sing her mother‘s music with her and Sacred Sound ensemble and Parable of the Sower Opera fam.

Affirmation of assignment received.

So much gratitude for @wisereagonarts @lincolncenter @shantourage @meiyinwang @chrisdecamillis #thanasispsarros #ministajazz

There were so many more incredible offerings that I do not have video of.

Grateful to be in the presence of sacred royalty @_angeladavis1944 , The SNCC FREEDOM SINGERS: #RuthaMaeHarris and #CharlesNeblett, Tashawn Reagon, The Vinsons, Jessica, Sonjessa Folosade & Delores Johnson, @alexispauline @carlhancockrux & more beloved community, grateful for the love power on the stage, and in the house — thunderous voices of love into tomorrow rekindling focus, and reminded me yes, absolutely yes, we can continue to heal and help to shape change, Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon so generously left us multitudes of maps of how to do so, together.

What a joy watching @rhiannongiddens and the @resistancerevivalchorus sing “Freedom Highway” (The Staple Singers) - a song that remains so powerful and relevant today. And to welcome the Buffalo in “Return of the Buffalo: Tatanka Owe Akupi” by Amir Nizar Zuabi @amirnizarzoabi (who also created Amal) was an honor. “Inspired by the buffalo’s extraordinary return - from near extinction to repopulation!!” This project interrogates ideas of land, ownership, migration, the value of animal and human life, movement, and indigeneity. And what a spectacle!! The buffalo were incredible. Big thanks to the band as well, @bgriptite on guitar, @alliboomboom on drums and @ganessajames on bass! 💫💫💫

Night 5 was the perfect closing to our Rhythm Residencies. Allison, having know Roberto and rehearsing at Michiko for 30 years, felt at home and offered a seat at the table to us all. The night ensued with a simmering duo version of ‘Jungle Soul,’ which happened to be Allison and Joe’s introduction to one another via Dr. Lonnie Smith. Soon after the show began Joe left the spotlight to Allison to perform a 35 minute solo set of inspiring melody and rhythm from behind the kit and her custom Electric Bike Frame built by a friend on the West coast.

After a fun intermission hanging with the artists, Joe returned to the stage to narrate a sonic landscape with samples and textures. His fluidity around the drum set felt empowering to witness as he unfolded musical phrasing to our ears. When Allison joined Joe again on stage we all applauded in excitement. They wrapped up their set with another groovy 15 minutes of collaboration before graciously thanking Roberto Romeo for hosting Rhythm Residencies at Michiko Studios.

Thank you to everyone who was apart of this series, we are grateful for all the support and excitement from listeners, artists, and hosts alike.

Thank you for making our first Rhythm Residencies a success! A huge shoutout to all of the artists and our partners @goodhandsdrumshop for helping with backline. @canopusdrums for also assisting with backline and outfitting our studio with stellar drum sets. And @zoomsoundlab for providing cameras to archive and share this event with a wider audience in the future.

Thank you Kyle and Stephane for m operating the mixing board.

We knew we’d have fun, but the audience each night proved to us these events are necessary for our community. Perhaps we should do it again??? Let us know your thoughts and we’d love to see and hear your videos!
