Florida discombobulated Florida Atlantic in their season opener, Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026, out scoring the Owls by 45 points in Jon Sumall’s first game as head coach.

Jon Sumrall and the Gators held their first fall scrimmage of 2026 on Saturday.

While the coach was procedurally displeased, he said the scrimmage went well overall as the team preps for a Sept. 5 opener against Florida Atlantic. The biggest areas of improvement Sumrall identified following the scrimmage were procedural issues and space tackling.

With my last piece going up this morning (shoutout to @vance.nilsson), my four semesters as the track and field/cross country reporter for @thealligator_ + @alligatorsports has come to an end. I’m so grateful for my time in this position and every lesson that came from it. I felt pretty comfortable covering the sport from 30,000 feet working for CITIUS, but fully honing in on just one team and its storylines and athletes — especially this year, where I was there from the first XC meet in Jacksonville all the way to Hayward — is an incredibly special experience.

I appreciate every coach, athlete and staff member for @gatorstf that gave me the time of day and were willing to help me make this one of the best TF/XC beats in the country (I hope).

Finally, I want to give a huge thanks to every editor that I ever got the pleasure of handing off 3,000-word NCAAs previews to. It’s very cool that you guys let me put as many incredibly niche stats and observations into my work as I did.

It’s been a pleasure 🤝

It was the Gators’ fifth championship contest in coach Jenny Rowland’s 11-year tenure.

Florida trounced Prairie View A&M, Friday, March 20, 2026, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Fla. The 59-point margin was the Gators largest in the tournament and the 114-point total was the most points in program history during a tournament game.
