Education System Leaders are signing Our Dulra Agreement to improve biodiversity on school grounds. All of the details are on the ISSN website. Minister O’ Sullivan is launching the agreement on November 12th. Share with Directors of Schools of ETBs, patron bodies and educational trusts. We all need to come together on this. How can we teach nature and foster a love of nature in nature depleted settings. We have something better waiting for us.

1000 Crocuses planted yesterday on our Quay!

Crocuses are a vital early-season food source for bees, providing essential nectar for energy and protein-rich pollen. We will see how they go.

Looking forward to seeing the colour in the spring. We will be adding more native and pollinator bulbs to four more of our beds over the next week or so.

Our goal is to build a connected network of nature-friendly habitats so that wild bees, hoverflies, butterflies, and moths can find food and shelter within short travel distances throughout village in line with the new updated All Ireland Pollinator guidelines. As the science now tells us that "Solitary bees and many smaller pollinators can only fly about 200 metres from their nesting sites to search for sustenance".

We are going to need continued help in our village to achieve this, watch this place as we need your help! 🐝🐝🐝

In the previous edition of the LDA Life Residents’ Newsletter, we shared helpful tips from All-Ireland Pollinator Plan on how residents can support biodiversity by growing a variety of herbs and flowers in their outdoor spaces.

We also invited residents to share the best photos of their garden or balcony in full bloom this summer. Thank you to all the residents who entered the competition, and congratulations to Clodagh, our winner!

In June 2026, the ISSN along with other members of the Biodiversity Working Group for Schools brought together some of the top systems leaders in Irish education to explore education's response to the biodiversity crisis.

Schools manage huge areas of land around the country and whilst some are already managing their grounds in a nature friendly way, they are yet to hear that message from the top.

We are delighted that patron bodies and school networks are already signing up to Our Dúlra Agreement, a commitment to a Nature-Rich Education. Has your patron body signed up yet?

Check out this short clip of Conor McCarthy, Principal of Tallaght Community National School, who started managing their grounds for nature in recent years. He explains the benefits he has seen in their students since changing from a mowed lawn to a nature rich campus.

From Grass Verge to Wildlife Corridor!
For months, the Glasnevin North Tidy Towns team has been working to transform a section of a grass verge on the Ballymun Road into a beautiful pollinator-friendly planted area.
This isn’t just about adding colour, it’s about creating food and shelter for nature and showing what’s possible in our public spaces. Some of our solitary bees travel no more than 200 metres so it’s really important we create these vital feeding ‘stops’ for them.
In Ireland our 100 species of wild bees are in decline and about a third are at risk of extinction.
We’ve planted a mix of pollinator-friendly perennials and herbs, including Salvia, Agapanthus, Black-Eyed Susan, Cowslip, Thyme, Lavender, Nepeta, Ajuga, Oregano, Rosemary and Coreopsis.
Imagine what our community could look like if more of our public spaces were planted for wildlife!
It’s a small step — but together, we can make a BIG difference for biodiversity.
A huge thank you to our volunteers who have made it happen and looked after it over the past few months. .

🌱Big news: ISSA is a partner to the new All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2026–2030 @allirelandpollinatorplan , contributing to the Buzzing Communities work package.

🐝Here’s why this matters to us: almost one in three of the island of Ireland’s 102 wild bee species is threatened with extinction. Buzzing Communities is about bringing gardens, schools, local communities, faith communities, and sports clubs together to create connected networks of nature-friendly habitat across the island - and that’s exactly the kind of grassroots, connected action we believe in.

☘️The vision for the 2026-2030 Plan is to create an island with pockets of nature every 200 metres. A solitary bee won’t fly more than about 200 metres to find food, so connecting pollinator-friendly spaces across our landscapes is important.

🌸For Irish Seed Savers, being part of Buzzing Communities means contributing to a shared effort to create connected networks of nature-friendly habitat across the island.

📍Coordinated by the National Biodiversity Data Centre, and supported by @npwsireland .

🌿💚 Our Riverwood Biodiversity Group bog garden is looking lovely! 💚🌿

Our little Riverwood Biodiversity Group bog garden is a great example of how even a small space can provide valuable habitat for wildlife and wet-loving plants. 🐸🌱🦋

📍 You’ll find it near the tennis courts in Riverwood, Carpenterstown, Dublin 15.

Come along, have a wander and see what’s growing! 🌼🐝

I felt very privileged to facilitate a creative drop in last weekend for the 2026 Waterford Wild Bee Festival by the @nationalbiodiversitydatacentre
in collaboration with the @WaterfordBcorridor at the Waterford Education Support Centre.

Here's a glimpse of the drop in space for 'cross pollination' of thoughts and ideas on arts, health, and climate inspired by wild bees. Different stations were signposted as a 'pollen trail' for inspiration, plate making, inking, stamping, and drying. The main activity was collagraphy printmaking involving re-use of packaging materials. The space was buzzing during the breaks!! Prints by Aisling, Dawn, Jane, Michael, Naomi, Shannon, Sonomi and many others are featured in this video.

I also made some beewings that we had fun with before inviting attendees to leave their comments on them at the end. Thanks to Marion Heasman from @SkerriesMillsCommunityGarden for modelling them so bee-autifullly here. It was inspiring to learn about the annual Skerries Wild Bee Festival.

The festival programme spotlighted the work of the @AllIrelandPollinatorPlan, a national initiative, as well as local projects by volunteers and community groups working together for biodiversity. There were many excellent talks and a wonderful walk where we learned about progress on the the B Corridor Project along the Maypark Trail. I enjoyed reconnecting with folk I met during the @Realtaartshealth Artist R&D Residency that I completed earlier this year. It was also lovely to meet lots of new people. Full programme info can be found here https://pollinators.ie/wildbeefestival/

Thanks to the festival team for the invitation to take part, especially Cecily, Kate, Sarah, and Ùna. Special thanks to Aisling Kett for the extra photos interspersed in this video, for general craic all weekend, and for being a tester in the process, together with @kateosheaartist, @fawn.allcaps and @iska_l

The newly launched @allirelandpollinatorplan 2026-2030 has a vision to create a pocket of nature every 200m, the maximum distance a solitary bee will travel to get food!

As a partner organisation, the involvement of our members is key to providing these spaces.

The @nationalbiodiversitydatacentre has said “wild pollinators are in decline, and it is essential that the AIPP works to address this and return pollinator diversity and abundance to the island of Ireland”.

By working with the farming community, the AIPP wants to increase awareness of pollinators, the benefits of pollinator action to farmland, and the habitats they require to survive.
