An old photo of me checking in at the Ludlow Hotel, shot on expired film with a Nikon that’s now somewhere along 95. There was a time where I only wore this cheetah print fur coat and couldn’t stand having my hair down. I was 20 and confused about what city I wanted to live in and what the choice might make of me. I came in and out of New York for years, quickly abandoning dreams for new ones. I left again shortly after this night. It wouldn’t be until the fall and a conversation on Mott street that I realized I don’t believe in leaving New York. Not yet at least. I decided to look for the photo that felt like the start of the end of the life I had been living. (This one)

I spent 24 hours at the Ludlow falling in love with a boy I met outside of New York, writing letters to our future selves that no longer exist, and smoking on the gym roof. I haven’t been back since. I don’t like returning to places. Even places that were good to me. If I went back now I worry I’d run into an angry 20 year old me asking what I thought I was doing here, worry that I invaded a space that was not meant for me now but only for me then. That my time card had been punched out and not by me. However, this coat will always belong to me.
