The window is in the middle of the vanity, not above it.

Two sinks, two lit mirrors, and the window sitting between them. The wall that would normally carry one long mirror got broken into three parts on purpose, so each side has its own mirror and its own daylight rather than sharing a single sheet of glass with a window off at one end.

It costs the uninterrupted mirror wall, and with it the illusion of a larger room. What it buys is two positions that behave identically, which is what a bathroom used by two people at the same time actually needs.

Symmetry is worth more here than the appearance of size.

Would you give up the long mirror to get the window between the sinks? Two lit mirrors either side of a black framed window, the taps, navy vanity, dark hex floor

The same pattern, twice in one room, running two different ways.

It goes vertical in the shower, a narrow column floor to ceiling with plain tile either side of it. Then it goes horizontal behind the vanity, a band at counter height that stops where the mirror starts.

Two orientations, and no third appearance anywhere else in the room. Vertical pulls the wall up, horizontal stretches it sideways, and using both means the pattern is answering the proportions of each wall rather than being applied to all of them.

Give a pattern a job and a boundary. Then stop. The same botanical tile running vertically in the shower and horizontally behind the vanity, black framed mirror

A little color, a little character, and a whole lot of charm. 🛁🤍

Soft sage-green tile, warm brass details, and a soaking tub made for slowing down. This Willow Glen primary bath is the perfect mix of playful personality and peaceful retreat.

We wouldn't mind spending a little extra time here. ✨

I always think a material makes more sense once you see where it lives.

Stone, tile, wallpaper, wood, and textiles can look completely different on their own than they do once they become part of a room. Scale, color, texture, and the materials around them all play a role in how they come to life.

A few examples of how the material became part of the design.

Same wall, twice.

Unlit, the wall is doing structural work. It is a dark slab holding one end of a pale room, and it looks deliberate at eleven in the morning in August when nobody is thinking about a fire.

Lit, it changes job entirely. The fire becomes the only warm thing in the room and the wall steps back behind it.

A fireplace gets specified for the weeks it is running and then lived with for the months it is not. Most of the year it is a large dark rectangle you look at. That is the condition worth designing for.

It has to be worth looking at cold. The fireplace wall unlit, two sconces, slider to the patio

The color runs floor to ceiling behind the tub, and then it stops.

Everything else in the room is quiet: large format gray on the other walls, gray underfoot, and the recessed niche cut into the gray rather than into the blue. One surface carries the whole idea and the rest gets out of its way.

That restraint is what lets the blue read as a decision. Take it around all four walls and it stops being a choice and starts being a scheme, and a scheme is much harder to live with when the light changes.

Would you have run the color across the whole room, or kept it to one wall? Fish scale tile running floor to ceiling behind the tub, glass screen, hand shower

The bench and the niches are the parts of a shower you only notice once you are standing in it.

A built-in bench gives you somewhere to sit and somewhere to put a foot up, which is the difference between shaving your legs comfortably and doing it against a wall. The niches sit at two different heights on purpose, so the bottles you reach for daily are not stacked in with the ones you reach for monthly.

Neither decision changes what the room looks like from the doorway. Both change what it is like to use.

A shower gets used every day and photographed once. Build it for the first one. Shower with a built-in bench, recessed niches at two heights, tile column, tub alongside
