“The future may sound different, but I KNOW it’s going to be funky!” - Charles Levine

A new chapter is being written for Soul Clap, and Charles Levine is the one writing it. After 25 years as a duo, Eli Goldstein steps away from the project and Charles Levine takes the helm, shaping the Soul Clap sound for the future. He leads Soul Clap Records, which reaches its 100th release in November, while the two keep curating House Of EFUNK brand together.
The road to house ran through hip-hop, R&B, reggae, rock, funk and soul. Charles’s first decks, Gemini belt-drives bought during high school, taught him fast that “you can’t do a damn thing on belt-drive decks.” His first rave got him hooked, and the lofts and warehouses around Boston and in Los Angeles did the rest. In 2001 the fusion of Charles’s funk and disco roots with Eli’s garage and jungle background became Soul Clap. Their mentor was Caril Mitro, the DJ and tastemaker who brought New York’s sounds to 1970s Boston. Her record shop, Vinyl Connection, was “where we were educated on so much,” and her guidance was that “house wears many hats,” the foundation of Soul Clap’s musical eclecticism.
From there, the funk and soul side of Soul Clap carried the duo from the Marcy Hotel in Brooklyn to residencies at Circoloco and Trouw, with compilations for DJ Kicks, Fabric and Watergate along the way.
Their first album, EFUNK, led them to George Clinton and an honorary place in the P-Funk family, and together they cut “In Da Kar,” with Sly Stone on keys in a rare appearance.

The future of Soul Clap lives on in its music, with many new original works, remixes and edits expected under both the Soul Clap and Charles Levine names, alongside a steady release schedule on Soul Clap Records, House Of EFUNK and the growing EFUNK touring series, which includes the highly coveted annual two-day Detroit marathon with Paxahau at TV Lounge, the official afterparty of Movement.

As part of this new chapter, from today, US house music and eclectic mainstay Soul Clap, now solely led by Charles Levine, joins the Sounds Familiar roster for EU & UK territories.
