“They Will Kill You” BTS - Cape Town ‘24
A bucket list worth of filming experiences checked off 🤩 My first big studio-based shoot - and a display of Cape Town’s talent.
1. Fly walls removed for an epic dolly track - @mmyhala running full speed in heels
2. Massive slider rigged parallel to an air vent for a classic action sequence - the image was shifted vertically to give the impression they’re moving directly upwards, with the actors/doubles rigged to wires
3. One of the tamer shots from an epic fire stunt sequence that they set to Doechii’s Crazy 😅 Zazie’s a badass fire-axe-wielding warrior you just have to watch it…the fire was a weapon but also a light source, making for some awesome fight cinematography.
4. Rain tower on the move while B-cam gets inserts - ft. Tumi tryna stay positive through night shoots in the wind and rain
5. Make it rain 🌧️
6. Elevator shaft build for a chase sequence on the technocrane.
7. Blood blood and more blood continuity. Team work from the legendary costume department who fabricated hundreds of this hero shirt for all the stages of blood and wreckage Zazie goes through.
8. “Do any more checks on Zazie in the meantime please” “Yeah trust me checks are hard at it 😅”. Mad respect for all the HMU/costume standbys for the pressure you had to work under on this one 🫶🏻
9. Bestieeeee
10. Handsome lad ft. some horror chaos in the background 🤣
11. My boss man on the mic 🎙️ Marcy Trout one of my mentors and the AD that trusted me to 3rd on my first big job🥹
12. Another mentor, teacher, and brother Mr Andile Pakade. My Leader 🫡
13. The flow of filmmaking is so beautiful to me. Wait for the last few seconds on the fram on the left - a stunt rehearsal happening while we fly tracks and change set ups.
14. Quick sesh in the stunt workshop in between set ups with @iam_snembatha 🤣😤
15. Izinja zam’ - Moondogz Lighting 🫶🏻 but yasis trying to lock off this lighting team 😮‍💨
16. A family affair

Had such a good time with this team running the socials unit for a massive @gatehousecommercials job. I’ve come to really love working as an AD on splinter units as it puts my problem solving and time management skills to the test, all whilst building my 1st AD experience 💅🏻 You have to schedule with an understanding of the main unit’s flow (was great getting to work with Andrew Faber on this one), but also be able to constantly adapt, knowing that your unit’s needs are typically not prioritized when changes to the day are made. But it can be SO rewarding when you’re able to build a good relationship with main unit, and work the logistics in your favour so that your director leaves the shoot feeling super satisfied with what they were able to get - and this job was just that. This team killed it and our client and agency couldn’t stop singing our praises - to which our DOP @jessjamesharris responded with “have you worked with SA crew before?” which pretty much summed it up 🫶🏻

Earlier this year I came onto a @moonlighting_commercials job as a Daily AD where I was juggling talent between Main, B-Cam, Socials and Stills and working with 5 different 1st/2nd 2nd ADs, (some French and some local) who all wanted to make sure to get *their shots*. I can still hear “Bringgg mee zee modelsss NOW!” ringing in my ear piece 😅😅 It really sharpened my teeth to how much you need to be flexible on the day and take all of your units’ needs into consideration - so that one units’ delays don’t cause knock on effects. Being the person in between all the units as I was the key person managing the talent had me walking 15km+ in studio and being torn in different directions but I really had a blast.

Bouncing between different roles has really helped me grow in the AD department - even though my journey has been quite unconventional. I love that I can work under a range of 1st ADs and soak up all the knowledge, whilst getting to build my own style of running the floor on smaller shoots.
I never thought I would enjoy working on commercials but it’s really such an amazing space to hone your skills and build your knowledge of filmmaking. The perfect pressure cooker for an AD!

2026 check-in ✨

Amidst local industry instability, international anxieties around the future of filmmaking, and experienced colleagues reaching out asking “are you also just waiting for the phone to ring?” - it’s not been an easy 6 months.

But as tough as it’s been - I found myself on a set this week that re-lit the joy and the drive to keep pushing forward, despite these anxieties. I felt the spark of what drew me to this path, and man that spark is powerful because it’s not an easy journey.

Beyond the stories we hold and birth into the world - there is such beauty in the process of filmmaking. A process that needs to be protected - a perfect example of how humanity and technology collide.

After gathering at parliament with filmmakers and workers alike - I was connected with the deep pride I have for our local industry, and that I get to be a part of this community.

And man - after having spent the last 4/5 years witnessing what SA crew can do, I have to believe that we’ll all come out on the other side 🩷

BTS from Finding Optel 🐕🪁

So lovely to see all the efforts of this team come together in such a charming film.
I remember this day so clearly - it was our one day with the ronin (shoutout @zootee_studios - you can see how necessary it was for this shot). We started early to catch this beautiful first light and had another 3 unit moves after this - but the team set an awesome tone and start to the day with this scene. The biggest challenge was trying not to giggle from behind the camera.

Go catch it on @showmaxonline for a perfect family watch this festive 🥰
