@allysonstrafella

Traces of Home | Reality Woven from Memory and the Typewriter

The second part of the exhibition features a series of works created by Allyson Strafella through walking, observing, and distilling experiences from the natural landscape of her @allysonstrafella hometown, Columbia County, in the United States. In 2003, she worked on an organic farm, driving a Kubota tractor across 25 acres of land to till the soil and sow seeds, watching as the crops eventually emerged. The colorful marks left upon the land became paintings in themselves, much like the traces she creates on paper through the “writing” of her typewriter.

This experience fundamentally transformed her understanding of painting, liberating her to consider its boundaries from a broader perspective and to explore the infinite possibilities of mark-making.

Through her work, Allyson Strafella maintains a dialogue with the world. Using writing, traces, and repetitive labor as methods, she explores the boundaries between language, paper, and perception.

Temple of Heaven, Marked. A Typewriter’s Shadow of Beijing
Meridian Gallery presents Marked Place, a solo exhibition by Allyson Strafella, on view August 15 – September 13, 2026.
The first body of work in the exhibition draws from Strafella‘s sustained engagement with the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Through careful observation distilled over time, she transforms lived experience into images of striking clarity and quiet intensity — visual poems that unfold at the threshold between the familiar and the strange. Struck by typewriter, these works inhabit an abstracted reality that feels at once intimate and remote, held in tension by a shifting sense of scale.

Marked Place, a solo exhibition by Allyson Strafella, on view from August 15 to September 13, 2026.

Occupying both gallery spaces, the exhibition brings together two distinct bodies of work. One centers on the open landscapes of Columbia County, while the other presents traditional architectural scenes developed following the artist’s 2025 residency in China. Distilled through a sustained process of observation and reflection, these works transform lived experience into images of remarkable clarity and quiet intensity, unfolding like visual poems.
Thanks everyone for being so fond of @allysonstrafella 💖

In Hudson, NY today, chaotic and excellent paintings by Matt Tienan @tarkuswilliams2.0 @tanjagrunertgallery along with great stuff by Steve DiBenedetto, Alexander Ross and Nicole Hayes.
Then @philipdouglasfineart @allysonstrafella shows her delicate and intense works of typed marks on handmade paper and carbon or transfer paper. Lots of detail pics of these because that’s where the devil is.

Allyson Strafella recent works on paper opens July eighteen 1-5. Curators, museums, artists, collectors take note. This one is what you might call right in your wheel house. Hand made paper artworks with imagery typed onto the page by a cleverly reconfigured old school carbon paper using typewriter with color & composition provided by various carbon paper colorizations and the specific paper color specs laid out for the paper maker by the artist. This is Rain Man brilliant with serious chops. Zen likenesses, associative historic relevances, color brillancies, soul soothing. Printed brochure with poetic introduction by Nancy Shaver and George Liu. Must see in person. Opens July 18 @philipdouglasfineart
