Marking my first month (more actually) living on an island… as a certified Open Water Diver.

If you told my university self this would happen, I probably wouldn’t believe you.

I studied Oceanography, but I spent more time in organizations, communities, and creative projects than underwater. After graduating, my career took me in a different direction, but at the end of 2024, I found myself thinking: “maybe it’s time to reconnect with the ocean.”

So I made a very specific wish, to work in communications, at a marine conservation NGO, somewhere in NTB or NTT.

Almost two years later, I received a simple message from Rose about an opportunity at Coral Catch.

And now, here I am.

One month into island life.

Riding a bicycle instead of sitting in Jakarta traffic. Watching sunsets that never get old. Meeting people from all over the world. Finding a second family that has made this tiny island feel like home.

Most of my days are spent listening, observing, asking questions, and translating what happens on this little island into stories that people, no matter where they are, can connect with. Every dive, every restoration effort, and every community program reminds me that conservation isn’t just about protecting the ocean, it’s also about helping people understand why it matters.

Somewhere between work, corals, and countless laughs…

I became a certified Open Water Diver.

That definitely wasn’t part of the original plan, but maybe that’s the beauty of saying yes to new opportunities!

To my Coral Catch family, thank you for making this first month unforgettable.

And if there’s one thing I’d love to leave you with, it’s this:

Keep manifesting.

Write it down.
Say it out loud.
Dream as specifically as you can.

Maybe it won’t happen this year. Maybe not even next year.

But one day, you’ll realize you’re no longer wishing for that life.

You’re living it.

Cooking time (almost) every weekend! And my lovely bike hehe

Love u all!

[25-31 May 2026] Part 2/4 of GEx Bali/Lombok. Translates to “ Rainbow troops, unbounded by time, don’t stop coloring, millions of dream on earth”. This song is quite a lovely song to sing, rather popular in Indonesia, cute title, and the class and fishermen Pelita group were singing it during camp! I think the essence of the song encapsulates the feeling I want to convey in this reflection!

Now you’re at the Lombok side of the trip! Which actually spans west Sumbawa to Lombok to Gili Matra! This week is actually the heaviest in content, I’m not sure I could fit all I want to convey in 20 slides…

1. The group photo of the class @gexlombali with JARI @jarifoundation and Pelita Poto Tano @pelitapototano group on Bukit Kenawa (Kenawa hill)! The hill offers great sunset views, hence the huge crowd of tourists (us included) gathering atop and walking back down. As expected there’s lots of tourists from the liveaboards in their bathing suits and alcohol consumption, they were there to enjoy their holidays overseas. However, there’s more to Kenawa than a stopover sunset spot. The island has a local couple running a few warungs (shops), selling halal food. As the local culture of Gili Balu (eight islands) is conservative, there is a point of discussion of whether tourist ought to respect local sensibilities. To avoid consuming alcohol and dress modestly when visiting the island for a short stopover, while reducing litter. I have seen some acquaintances that also visited this island during their holidays through IG, the onus might be the tour operators informing the guest the etiquettes in their liveaboards… Anyways, the hill and sunset were a sight to behold!

2. Octopus fishing with Pak Sampurea! As part of the camping experience with JARI and folks from Poto Tano town, each student got to go one on one with an octopus fishermen using up to two types of fishing lure! I only use one type, which is the crab shaped lure with hooks called Keong! We explored the sea, chatted, ate breakfast, and caught nothing and laughed for 3 hours! My Bahasa is still pretty broken then, so hand gestures

This June, 5 Sharkies crossed the finish line of their Divemaster training and joined our growing family of ocean advocates. 🥹🤿

Their journey was about more than becoming dive professionals. They spent months learning, surveying reefs, identifying marine species, supporting conservation activities, and gaining a deeper understanding of the ocean they now help protect. 🪸🦈🐢

From their first days in the program to their final assessments, they showed commitment, resilience, and a genuine passion for conservation.

To our newest Conservation Divemasters: @almaaa._ @nathankerckhofff @fangggs @gabrie.la_ferreira @caroline.cairns congratulations !!! We are incredibly proud of what you have accomplished and excited to see the impact you will continue to make for our oceans. 🌊✨

The ocean needs more divers who care. Today, we’re celebrating 5 more.
👏💙

Want to become a Conservation Divemaster too? Join our next program and start making a difference with every dive. 🤿
