'Backs', Hannah O’Brien, Ferments & Books, Los Angeles, 2024, 64 pages, staple-bound, 5.5x7.25” Taking a picture of the back of a person can be an easy way to bypass the invasive act of taking someone's picture without asking them. So, I think that is why I have so many pictures of peoples' backs. As I looked through my phone I found that I have pictures of so many other backs too, just backs of things in general. If I wasn't stubborn I likely would have reoriented the project to be backs of everything: how many types of backs can I find!, but I wanted to stick to using the tens of thousands of photographs that I already had on my phone prior to the idea. Organizing images in InDesign is an activity that reminds me of the way I used the computer as a kid. What was the process? I created a folder with hundreds of images. Whittled down the folder. Arranged the images to nauseam. Lastly, weaved the images together with captions, stories, automatic writing, and diaristic excerpts. Then, it started all over again, and again. How did you come to produce (design, print, bind) the publication like you did? The size of the publication is compact, I wanted it to feel like a pamphlet. The layout and bind is saddle stitch, and that decision is partly due to accessibility, it requires less tools, and additionally signature spreads are more fluid across saddle stitch binding. The book was printed for me by a friend who had access to a print shop and a guillotine paper cutter. How was it distributed? Who did you imagine audiences being? I imagined the audience being a mix of people: people who know me, and people who might find the book somewhere on a bookshelf; a bookshelf at a residence or a bookshelf in a store. It was distributed limitedly through the United States Postal Service to 20 people. Half of the people I sent it to were featured in the book and the other half were people who I met at a pop-up artist-goods sale called Ferments & Books. Hannah

A video from 2024: walking through Lemon Labyrinth For Mental Health in Los Angeles by Hannah O’Brien @almostapainter Revisiting this now, it stands out as an earlier instance of the same gesture, walking within a defined structure. The path is already laid out, and the movement follows it. There’s a clear relation between the body and a given form. Unlike my recent walks, where the structure is minimal or implied, here it is fully externalized. The lemons mark the path, making the act of walking visible and fixed in space. Looking back, the work feels like a starting point, an encounter with movement, repetition, and constraint that continues to develop in different ways.

Last spring at ArtCenter in Los Angeles @artcentermfa , I built a tent out of stretcher bars and canvas, using the same tools and materials I use to prepare a painting. This video shows that process. What is usually just a support structure for an image became something I could physically enter. A canvas turned into a shelter. I built it for a self-directed meditation retreat, loosely following a Vipassana schedule over a free weekend. But what feels central now is not the retreat itself, it’s the shift that happens in the act of construction: when painting leaves the surface and becomes spatial, architectural, and inhabitable. The gesture sits at the core of my practice. I’m often working with simple structures or objects that don’t illustrate meaning, but hold it, containers for attention, memory, and projection. Building the tent made that literal. The same logic that underlies my paintings, stretching, framing, layering, became something I could move inside of. The support and the subject began to collapse into each other. During the retreat, I also meditated on individual canvases, which became the starting point for my current interest: how to bring meditative attention into painting without depicting it. Not an image of stillness, but a structure shaped by it. In that sense, the tent is less a one-off experiment and more a blueprint, an early form of the “shelter” that continues to reappear across the work. This is just a short excerpt - happy to share the full video if you’re curious. Huge thanks to Hannah O’Brien for filming and editing this. @almostapainter
