Why do shelters and rescues often see more kittens in spring and summer?

Cats are long-day breeders, which means increasing daylight helps trigger their reproductive cycles. As days get longer in late winter and spring, many cats begin going into heat.

A cat’s pregnancy usually lasts about 63 to 65 days. After giving birth, a female cat can return to heat relatively quickly, so multiple litters can occur during one breeding season.

That is why spring and summer are often known as kitten season.

National #LoveYourPetDay is a simple prompt with a big truth behind it: our pets are family. They are part of the everyday moments, the steady routines, and the comfort we do not always notice until we need it.

But loving a pet also means being there in the hard moments. When a small animal is suddenly ill or injured, emergency care decisions can happen fast. And for some families, financial hardship can make those first steps feel out of reach.

The Wrigley & Cindy for Life fund helps offset the cost of the initial assessment and early treatment of ill or injured small animals during emergency care. The goal is to assist pet owners when financial hardship would otherwise prevent them from getting needed medical care for their animals.

If you are able, please make a gift in honor of a pet you love, or the people who helped you when it mattered at the Link in the comments.

a year ago today, this cat wouldn’t stop meowing at me at the humane society.. everyone said he was so big and muscle-y, he looked like he was going to out-lift me 😗 but then of course he turned out to be the most friendly and cuddly blob of a conversationalist (*^^*)
you’ll actually never be able to understand this but thank you for being mine and everyone else’s best buddy and emotional support animal, Pluto 💫🐈‍⬛

Dad thinks he found me at @almosthomehs but I chose him. He needed a service dog, but he wasn’t ready to be a dog dad again, which is why he went to the shelter. He never expected me to be there, but I was waiting for him. I showed him that I was attentive, wanted to understand what he was asking me to do, and not aggressive. He visited me every day until they let me go home with him, and this was one of those days. It was the best part of every day. I was only 10 months old so I had a lot to learn, but I learned quickly. Now I’m over 2 years old and I take care of my dad and always work very hard whenever he needs me, and he always lets me be a normal dog as often as possible. I’m happy that my forever home is with him. •
