POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

(PART 2) norm opens up about his relationship with vulnerability and holding things in. he shares stories of his time in the philippines and his family’s experiences weathering typhoons in the motherland.

drawing parallels between rainstorms and the emotions we carry, sitting across the board from him.. i’m reminded that sometimes the most healing release comes from making space for both a good cry and a good laugh.

meet norm.

a chef, comedian, and performer. a multitalented artist who brings the same thoughtfulness and depth to his work as he does to the people around him.

he’s put his 10,000 hours and then some into each of his crafts. but what speaks to me most isn’t just the skills he’s built… it’s his connection to his community, family, and close friends. its how much of himself he pours into the things he creates and expresses.

he has a way of transforming life’s heaviness into something we can carry a little easier…. through a meal that brings people together… or laughter that shifts the energy in a room. he reminds us that creativity can be more than a craft.. it can be a way of caring for people.

grateful to call him a good friend and to witness the gift he continues to share with the world.

check in across the board.

I’m honoured to share that our Faces of Scarborough documentary photo project and public exhibit in collaboration with @shopstc has been nominated as 1 of 28 artist projects selected for the 2026 @heritagetoronto Awards in the Large Project Public History category.

It truly means a lot when a passion project meant to highlight the untold stories of our neighbourhood heroes resonates with those outside of the community.

I hope this serves as a reminder to everyone putting in that work behind the scenes, even when it feels like no one is watching — keep going, don’t stop!

(PART 2) chino speaks about his process and role as a producer being anchored in the ability to lead by listening. there’s a beauty in keeping the creative process as free as possible, and he strongly believes in that, as music has saved his life in many ways.

EPISODE 007: Across the Board with Papa Walt.

papa walt believes the journey toward the board is part of the game itself. shaped by a military mind, he understands that every battle begins long before the first move. for him, victory isn’t only found in the outcome, but in the adventure of getting there. even an impossible mission can become possible when you’re willing to face the challenge.

meet my papa walt.

he’s my uncle from the philippines. in our family, he’s always been someone people looked up to. my dad and his brothers saw him as the older brother who led by example.

he served in the philippine military for over 35 years. somewhere along the way, he taught himself chess… not to master the game, but because it reflected something he already understood… life is about learning how to stay present on the board.

born during wartime, he spent much of his life moving from place to place. every move called for courage. every environment asked him to adapt. one of his daughters once told me,

“he’s lived on every square of the chessboard, the way he moved around in life.”

a life beautifully described.

to me, papa walt taught me that the game and the preparation are one and the same. that victory can be found in the adventure itself. that without challenge, there is no play.

check in across the board,
