Hi 👋🏾 I’m Southside Shai a DC-based folklorist and singer songwriter who recently co-released two versions of ‘Becoming Shai’ with @gory.kas on @soundcloud and @bandcamp

If you’d like to understand the lore behind Southside Shai, listen to the “full set” version

If you’re just looking for a good travel album, listen to the songs only

Welcome to the life of Shai 🐅

I’m a digital artist and musician living in Southeast DC and creating with an explicitly anti-apartheid AND and anti-gentrification platform (bc real ones know gentrification = genocide)

I blew up my life and officially became a DC dropout™️ because I saw the systems too closely, realized how little change I would actually enact through a 501(c)3 — and I would do it again and again and again if it means I can freely critique these failing systems.

I’m currently freeballing unemployment, putting hours into my music and the local arts scene here in DC while I figure out how to meet my monthly expenses while still being a vocal, visible advocate (and figuring out my lane).

My story is not unique, and my words represent every person who has shaped me into who I am — everything I do is to invest back in my community.

Feel free to follow along if you believe in the dreams of an artist who wants to use their gift to build a world worth saving.

Ignore these please

Field Notes 6.4.25

Blessed to find reasons to linger 🙏🏽

Ended up being the surprise last act at the open mic - shoutout to @me.n.my.house @alphadaengr and @noizthematrixisreal for being clear, unconditional, and brave in centering Palestine in your acts and giving me the courage to sing Seedlings.

I never thought I’d have a musical community like this — always thought I’d orbit like a glorified moon around planets I could never touch.

Thank you for bringing me back to Earth, you all don’t know what it is you do for me.
