When I was four years old, I used to spend my summers in a small village near Córdoba, Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, where my grandmother is from. My great-grandmother had a dog called Bobby. But I never really saw him as a dog, in my imagination, he became a bull, and I would play at being a torero for hours.

My great-grandmother found it so amusing that she made me a small red cape, just like the real matadors had. I must have driven that poor dog crazy, running circles around him all summer long. Who would have thought that many years later, I would end up wearing a “traje de luces” myself.

This editorial for Esquire comes exactly from that memory. From the imagery of bullfighting understood as a visual fantasy, a childhood game reinterpreted through adulthood. A character. An aesthetic. A tribute to the little boy who once stood in front of a mirror holding a red cape and dreaming.

But it also comes from another place: from someone who deeply loves and respects animals. No animals were used in these images, because that was never the point. There is no violence here, only symbolism, storytelling, and memory.

I believe traditions are part of the identity of every culture and deserve respect. But I also believe sensitivity evolves, and that beauty, emotion, and heritage can continue to exist without animal suffering being part of the spectacle.

Maybe both things can coexist: the memory of an aesthetic, and a new, more compassionate way of understanding it.

And somehow, this is the torero that my younger self would have dreamed of becoming.

Olé! 💃🏻
