de Grasse goes to Grasse 🥹🇫🇷

About 45 minutes outside of Nice is a little town I knew I had to see for myself while I was in France and honestly a major reason I went. Walking through streets with my own last name everywhere felt a little SURREAL like one of those random pieces of family history suddenly became real. So obviously I wanna share with y’all, and a lil family history lesson feels necessary.

Admiral François-Joseph-Paul de Grasse, my distant 8th great-grandfather, was a French naval commander who played a pretty major role in the American Revolution!! In 1781, his fleet defeated the British at the Battle of the Chesapeake, helping cut off reinforcements to Yorktown and contributing to the British surrender shortly after.
BASICALLY a long, roundabout way of saying… he helped win the war 🇺🇸 🦅🤠 SO yes, a French de Grasse helped America win independence lol.

And then there’s Grasse itself, what a beautiful city, the perfume capital of the world. The area became known for perfume production centuries ago thanks to its flowers, especially jasmine, roses, and orange blossom, and it’s still a huge part of the fragrance world today. The region grows and supplies to some major luxury brands, including houses like Chanel, Le Labo, and Dior, while also being home to historic perfume houses like Fragonard (my fav and what I am related to) Molinard, and Galimard.

There’s even a memorial to Admiral de Grasse there, so naturally… de Grasse had to go to Grasse.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

bonus: @alrides_ took me on my first motorcycle ride to and from the city, and honestly a 12/10 way to see and actually feel the countryside

Story time about my Australian friend Alex 🇦🇺
(but more importantly, a thank you to a friend who flew across the world to be my support system when I needed one.)

Alex & I met during a pretty weird chapter of both of our lives. We were both going through breakups, figuring out what came next, & somehow became kindred spirits in the middle of it.
He came from Australia to Colorado to figure out his own path, met me within three days & naturally I convinced him to do something unnecessarily hard: the Triple Bypass…118 miles & 10,000+ feet of climbing through the Colorado mountains at elevation 😮‍💨 buttt beyond signing up for my shenanigans, Alex showed up for me. He supported me at Boulder 70.3, listened to me talk through life, told me when I needed to slow down & became one of those friendships I never saw coming.

And then this dude flew ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTRALIA TO FRANCE to support me at Worlds. (But also bikepacked to Nice from Barcelona because he needed to do something hard too #euromaxxing 😂) naturally he was also my “bike mechanic,” which meant watching me unpack & rebuild my own bike while he just answered my questions because apparently “I’m just a girl” isn’t an excuse anymore.

But that’s kind of our friendship in a nutshell.
Alex told me one of the things he learned from me was to “do it anyway.” (new catch phrase? 😏) and I think one of the best parts of our friendship is realizing how much we’ve taught each other without ever really trying to.
Alex taught me a lot about valuing your people. You don’t have to see or talk to someone every day. You can annoy each other, disagree, get frustrated & ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT IT. Apparently Australians are just really good at communicating???

So thank you to my favorite Australian for traveling across the world to make sure I wasn’t doing that race alone

Cheers & vamos chicos 🤝

Here’s what has been going on.
Colorado did not disappoint.
Thank you to @triplebypassride for putting together such an awesome event. Such wonderful friends to ride it with.

I know it’s been a while since I have been (normal) active on here, after my trip to Colorado I went over to California for a family reunion. Unfortunately I came down with some sickness and kinda just became a couch potato for a few days. Thankfully I was able to get one ride in which I will share more about later, seeing family and eating food definitely made that part of the trip a million times better especially after getting to hear some amazing news!

Thank you to everybody who has and is following along with these random yet such important moments in my life, I love getting to share it all… the highlights and the frustrations.
